Q. 1048:
On his 50th birthday, this global sporting icon was honoured with a rose named after him at the Chelsea Flower Show, after his daughter reportedly requested horticulturists at David Austin Roses to create “something enduring” that would grow alongside their family.
Interestingly, beyond the world of sport, he has also lent his name to a famous finance-related term associated with outsized commercial and market impact created by celebrity associations and brand endorsements.
Identify him.

@CricketopiaCom One little known record - His 7-44 at Chepauk in 1934 is still the best bowling figures in an innings by a visiting bowler at Chepauk..Oh his 10-10 is the best bowling figures in an innings in all of FC cricket🔥🔥
English

#OnThisDay in 1905, Hedley Verity (slow left arm orthodox) was born today.
Nobody had a better record against Don Bradman than Verity, who dismissed him eight times in 17 Tests.
"With Hedley I am never sure," said The Don. "You see, there was no breaking point with him."
Overall he took 144 wickets in 40 Tests for England.
He was just 38 when he died
His 10 for 10 also includes a Hat-trick (only bowler to do so).
Verity took 1956 Wickets at 14.90. Took 164 five-fers & 54 ten-fer
Unfortunately he died of wounds a prisoner of war (WW2) in Italy in 1943

@MaataBhaarat @RSingh6969a There are a few more - Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Yashasvi Jaiswal!
English

@RSingh6969a Most of the about dozen Indians who scored a 100 on debut could get a second one, with the exception of Vishy, Azhar & Ganguly
English

Old Trafford, July 1959: Twenty year old #AbbasAliBaig on his way to a historic debut century. Summoned from Oxford to face the pace of Fred Trueman and Rhodes, Baig became the youngest Indian at the time to score a Test century on debut, etched forever into cricket folklore.

English

@RSingh6969a Until Kyle Mayers' 210* in 2021, Baig's 112 was the HS by a debutant in the 4th innings of a Test. He still remains the only Indian to score a 100 on debut in the 4th innings of a Test match. @Cric_Writer

@vmanjunath Godfrey Evans we're going with here

@di_an @thoravazhakkan @tossforagone @thefallingsweep @Dravidict Another line which stays in my memory from that book - We didn’t know that they were catches until Solkar started talking them!! (n/n)
English

@di_an @thoravazhakkan @tossforagone @thefallingsweep @Dravidict Raju Bharatan in his book - Indian cricket, the Vital Phase talked about things started happening in Indian cricket after Solkar materialized from nowhere at foward-short-leg. Wadekar at slip took catches in a deceptively lazy manner (2/n)
English

He is the first Test cricketer to be born in independent India . Kisi ko aapatti hain toh tahsildar office chalkar haffidavit de sakte hain ji @Dravidict 😅
Gaurav Gupta@toi_gauravG
Can you name this cricketer? 😀
English

@thefallingsweep @Dravidict @cricdrugs Ironmonger's 11-24 v SA at the MCG, 1932 is still the cheapest 10fer in Tests🏏🏏
English

Bert Ironmonger’s hand is hidden here . It remains an enigma how he could manage to turn the ball with an amputated finger in the bowling hand .
Debut at 46 and played test cricket till 50 .
@Dravidict @cricdrugs - deserves a thread 🧵 if you haven’t made one already .

Rameshwar Singh@RSingh6969a
Four cricketing icons in Melbourne, December 1967. Bert Ironmonger, Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, Jack Ryder and Pat O'Brien. Ironmonger, the legendary Australian left-arm spinner defied age by playing Test and First Class cricket well into his 50s
English

@thefallingsweep @Dravidict Just found out that Dilip Doshi was born on Dec 22, 1947. However, Solkar made his Test debut much before Doshi did!
English

@VAAChandran @Sanjaygupts1996 @Marcus60s70s80s I knew about the 555 partnership between Holmes and Sutcliffe. This was just before India's inaugural test with Eng. Nissar bowled both of them and Eng were 19-3 at one stage. That tidbit helped in getting to the answer🙂
English

@ssarathy Bingo.

Since the flavour of the season seems to be, 'Only 1% of people can identify the player', I thought I'd chime in as well.
Please identify the players, the two teams, the venue & the year.

@SundarSrik @amittalwalkar And Hanif’s 337 is still the longest Test innings!!
English

@amittalwalkar Hanif Mohammad - scored a massive 300+ in the Windies - first Asian to cross 300 in a test innings, and also score 499 (first class), Lance Gibbs - highest wicket taker - 309 before it was broken!
