I think more open source projects should have a commercial clause. If it’s the fruit of enough labour, you’d be surprised how many people will be willing to pay for it. And you should get paid for it. You can make it cheap, focus on distribution, and make it worth your while with enough adoption. If you can’t figure out how to extract value from your own labour, then you should rethink why you’re doing it. If you’re using it to gain recognition and reputation, that’s good and worthwhile, but there’s a limit to it, try to get paid soon after.

And of course bookstack, which I use at home for personal tech documentation and also host for my work's small business for our internal documentation repo! Big fan - always recommend it as FOSS documentation software.

@ssddanbrown Just wanted to say that your video for SAML2 Authentication on BookStack on fossvideo was great. I was trying to understand / test SAML and that guide (despite using Azure vs OKTA) was enough it to work and helped my understanding tremendously. Thanks for that video!

@tweethue Stop giving this reasoning, it's incredibly condescending. I don't want additional cloud-based features. I don't want additional data of mine in your system to control my lights. This is not required for creating a secure system, and may often achieve the opposite consequences.

@ssddanbrown As the features we develop grow, so does the need for more advanced security. To keep your accounts and products secure and ensure you get the most out of your system, you’ll need to create a Philips Hue account soon.

Hey @tweethue, Requiring account sign-in to use my lights is a massive change to the product. I bought into the Hue ecosystem specifically because it worked locally only.

@mariushosting @PlausibleHQ The master tag is way older than the current versions, and is likely just an old development version that didn't have flags set to represent the selfhosted version. Doesn't seem like something to worry about, but also not sure if there's a reason you're using the master tag?

@PlausibleHQ is the self-hosted Plausible version limited to 30 days? I see this using the :master tag.

Within this top 10, neither Massa nor Nango are open source. This is a continued pattern in Runa misrepresenting projects as open source in their lists and the news articles they generate.

@RunaCapital Out of these the following are not open source: - Warp (They explicitly say they're closed source in their license). - Readyset (BSL, old versions will begin to be open source in 2026)

@vinogradovk @RunaCapital @OpenReplayHQ But then where do you draw the line for what open source is? Some of those project's licenses are quite restrictive. Obsidian isn't even source available. This kind of thing is commonly seen as attempting to stretch the open source definition for marketing and business benefit

@ssddanbrown @RunaCapital There are two approaches to open source: orthodox and commercial. As a VC, we stick to the latter and consider e.g. Elastic and MongoDB as COSS companies, despite SSPL is not approved by the OSI. The same for @OpenReplayHQ and many others.

@RunaCapital Examples of non-open-source projects in your "top 50 fastest-growing open-source projects" list include: - OpenReplay - Umbrel - Netmaker - Obsidian Please at least start checking the licenses. Just publishing code to GitHub doesn't make you open source.

Had a stuck "account blocked" message in @monzo, gone through 3 support people, think they've given up and resorted to the great fixer of "wait until the issue goes away" 😅
