@st93633 @MurrayRundus Its not a question of validity. Thats not the contention. Regardless of what Rome decides the consecrations of the SSPX and/or the Chinese bishops is valid because of the consecrators orders
Its about whether its legal, “licit”. A sacrament may be valid, but illegal.

@The_AncientCHKN @MurrayRundus There’s a difference between without a mandate and against a mandate. But the Chinese bishops were approved by the Pope. Whether or not you think that’s good or bad it’s not the same situation. The Chinese bishops were not valid until the pope approved of them.

If in principle the consecrations without mandate are bad, then why are they not calling out China and gleefully demanding the excommunication of Chinese bishops as they do to the SSPX.

Say what you like about the SSPX, they weren’t founded by a sex-abusing monster. It is a scandal that three popes in succession have allowed the LC to survive.

This interpretation by some SSPX supporters is disingenuous. 1324.8 is about 1 who erroneously believes he is under grave fear when committing a serious act. For that to apply to the SSPX consecrations, either (1) they have to be already in schism in their hearts to think that other Catholic priests cannot provide Catholic sacraments, or (2) too ignorant to be a good candidate for the episcopacy. 1324 also only applies to a diminution of a prescribed punishment in the law, but this is irrelevant when the punishment is given explicitly with reasonable knowledge of the mental state. The note earlier this week from the DDF indicates a specific punishment (not a prescribed punishment) and we can assume the DDF has a reasonable knowledge of the mental state based on public SSPX statements, thus this no longer valid. 844.2 is about getting sacraments from a non-Catholic minister in a case where you can't get them from a Catholic minister. This admits that after the proposed schismatic acts, the SSPX ministers will not be Catholic. This could fit for a lay person where they have some moral impossibility of going to any minister except SSPX priests. This is why the mental state of laity exclusively attending SSPX liturgies matters in determining if they will be schismatic if they keep going after the leadership goes into schism.
