Since having a baby it has become impossible for me to look at people and not see them as they were when they were a newborn. It has completely altered how I perceive people, my empathy and love for everyone has skyrocketed. I think I understand what is meant by "God's Children".

i don’t understand why immigration of any sort is universally unpopular. almost every country on earth heavily restricts it this is a recent thing too! before world war 1, you could just take a steamship from Brazil to Paris for $20 and decide you lived in France now what changed? are people bad now? is that the reason more people are even more bad? back then income wasn’t taxed in most jurisdictions either. now we tax our own people’s income & we don’t allow others to immigrate and earn income. i ask again, are people bad? is working bad? where did this zero sum attitude come from? what if we could also start deporting our own citizens, to have as few people as possible. would that be even better? is 0 the best amount of people? what is the point of all this?

I honestly thought when @tszzl was talking about GPT's goblin obsession that it was an inside joke I didn't get I also kinda love that LLMs keep surprising us by having random bizarre obsessions, it's important to remember that they're alien intelligences and not a type of guy

I once tried explaining the Monty Hall problem to a neighbor in the boonies he wouldn't switch bc the host was out to get him; no, framing the problem as "the host always does this" doesn't help, that's a lie he told you he would be forced to click a button as well

I once ran a variant of this for some high schoolers; 1 red-picking lass asked why anyone would ever pick blue, to which one of my pointers was "someone might misunderstand the details" She wasn't convinced until it turned out a minute later she'd misunderstood the details

i'm scared to admit that i'm coming around to this idea i used to be very "honesty above all" but now i view it more as a courtesy to those who have earned it there are SO many ways you get burned for being honest people project people misinterpret sometimes deliberately
