Aged ex nurseryman and wannabe 'eco warrior'. Always trying to bridge the gap between myself and nature. Can't resist cartoons, Gerberas, and my own lame jokes!

Beavers are back living wild in the Lake District – which is wonderful news. But if you read the article, and especially the words of local conservationists, the fear is palpable. Power in the countryside most definitely does *not* reside with the overwhelming majority of people who will be delighted with the return of beavers. newsandstar.co.uk/news/26102505.…

A scouting mission this week on Ponza, Italy shows poaching is plummeting, but the fight continues. A repeat offender was caught with a freezer full of protected migrants - including 14 scientifically ringed birds. Our pressure works. But one trap is still one too many.

Meet the velvet mite! This arachnid lives in topsoil and breaks down dead plant and animal matter. Human agriculture, and the survival of virtually all plant species, depends on continuous renewal of topsoil by tiny organisms like this mite.

Meet the Crested Coua! It's endemic to Madagascar, where it lives in a variety of habitats, such as forests, mangroves, & savannas. Although it’s related to cuckoo birds, it is not a parasitic nester and actually cares for its hatchlings.

Happy Caturday! Meet the fishing cat. Found in parts of Southeast Asia, this critter prefers to inhabit areas near bodies of water, like mangroves, marshes, & swamps. It's a specialized fish-hunter, sometimes dunking its head below the surface to catch food in its mouth.
