@planetJoseph Brandon Sanderson is very creative with magic/power systems. The Mistborn series, Stormlight Archive series, and a bunch of standalone books* all tie into his greater universe. The connections are really interesting. *Elantris Warbreaker Edgedancer Tress of the Emerald Sea

My wife and I are celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary tonight by attending our daughter’s high school band concert, but we had a very talented neighbor make us an incredible speculoos/chocolate raspberry cake & I’m very excited to tuck into it tonight.

@drsarah You know what's truly deranged? Making everything in US politics all about one person. Not issues or policies. One man. And dividing people as either for or against that man. It's exhausting.

Rooibos in a Poe mug, a Newbery mystery and the glow of a reading lamp at the kitchen table after the rest of the house has gone to bed. As Frank Loesser wrote “my time of day is the dark time.”

@planetJoseph Not defending the church at all, but I think being taught about JS's polygamy was hit or miss. I was taught about it at an institute activity mid-90s but very much framed as "he really didn't want to but God was going to punish him." Of course now I know it was BS.

@hoinowski @twilight_lurker @lady_valor_07 It is the problem. Some states do have a much higher base wage for restaurant servers, but federal minimum wage for servers is still $2.13/hour. Regular minimum wage ($7.25/hr) hasn't been increased since 2009, but server minimum is the same as when I waited tables 34 years ago.

@GrampyJoe1968 @lady_valor_07 👏🏻 the guy gave her $40 possibly equivalent to three hours of her salary, does the attention really last 20 minutes maximum? I don’t see it as bad

@lady_valor_07 It's a little low, but she still shouldn't have been expecting $120. 15% would have been $55, and that's enough. It's a tip, not a salary.

@JGatlin51296 @twilight_lurker @lady_valor_07 If you eat at a restaurant in the US where someone waits on you at your table, yes you are required to supplement that person's wages. If it pisses you off that much don't go to a restaurant or take action to change the system.

@craigaemery1 @lady_valor_07 I don't disagree with you. Our system in the US is awful. Where I live, servers are paid a base wage of $2.13/hr (whis hasn't changed in at least 35 years) and tips are supposed to get them to at least minimum wage. Some places also require tip sharing with hosts & bussers.

As an Australian, I find tipping offensive. A “tip” should be what it used to mean - an above and beyond ‘extra’ for above and beyond service. As a service user I am giving the service the honour of my patronage, they should be grateful. It is not my role to pay or supplement the wage of an employee. That’s what unions, minimum wages, and enterprise bargaining are for. If the business doesn’t pay their staff enough then I should reconsider giving them my custom. This is an indictment on the working conditions in a country, that requires this. Otherwise only the rich can afford to go out, and small businesses will be forced to close. It’s a fundamentally flawed system.

@lady_valor_07 While I think the tipping system in the US is flawed, this is not a good tip. This is less than 10% (should be at least 15-20%). It's definitely considered an insult among restaurant workers.

These photos of a Utah dad dying of cancer while welcoming his newborn child to the world are astonishingly intimate and heartbreaking. The photo essay by a Washington post photographer just won a Pulitzer. Journalism matters. pulitzer.org/winners/jahi-c…

@Cumpelforeskin @hell_line0 So you are calling women who have miscarriages, ectopic pregnancies, and fatal fetal abnormalities "baby killers"? And you are calling married women with wanted pregnancies that go horribly wrong "whores"? Why don't you shame guys who force & coerce women & girls into sex?

I voted for President Trump three times, and I’d gladly do so again. That said, I have a sincere, question about something I’m genuinely trying to understand. If the U.S. is energy independent, why are gas prices spiking again? They are getting close to the highs we saw under Biden? I know tensions with Iran are playing a role right now, but I thought energy independence was supposed to shield us from these kinds of swings. Can someone explain what’s driving this? I’m not here to criticize Trump, just looking for a clear explanation. Thanks.
