I finally had enough money for a Ferrari, but I bought a protein bar machine instead. Here’s why that choice led to a billion-dollar exit: I showed off that custom-built protein bar machine like it was a Lamborghini. Every investor who walked into our facility got the tour. Every potential partner got dragged to the production floor. I was more excited about welded metal and conveyor belts than any car I could've bought. Every manufacturer told us it was impossible to make protein bars without high fructose corn syrup. They said the texture wouldn't work. They said consumers wouldn't buy it. They said we'd fail. So we built our own machine. We literally sawed pieces off other equipment and welded them together. We created something that didn't exist. That machine was my Ferrari. While other CEOs were buying luxury cars, we were buying industrial saws. While they were leasing status symbols, we were building competitive advantages. While they looked successful, we were becoming successful. Here's our playbook… 1. Fall in Love With Your Unfair Advantage Most founders chase the lifestyle before they build the business. I was obsessed with the machine because it was the thing competitors couldn't copy. 2. Invest in Moats, Not Image Every dollar I didn't spend on a fancy car went into equipment that made us unstoppable. That machine let us scale while competitors were stuck with manufacturers who said "no." 3. Pride in Process, Not Possessions Your team doesn't rally around your watch. They rally around the thing you built together that shouldn't exist. 4. Build What Others Say Is Impossible When everyone tells you it can't be done, you've found your opportunity. Our "impossible" machine became a 10-year head start. 5. Show Off the Right Things I gave more tours of that production floor than any showroom. Investors didn't care about my car. They cared about our machine that printed money. Your competitive advantage deserves more attention than your status symbols. 57,000% growth later, we sold Quest for $1 billion. Not because I looked like a success. Because I built like one. My Ferrari was a machine that made protein bars. And it drove me to a billion-dollar exit.
