I was watching this video from @polyfjord yesterday and I was completely blown away by Cycles' improvements using DLSS. This isn't just an incremental improvement, this is a paradigm shift, the benchmark scenes literally ran like they were rendered in EEVEE. I am absolutely speechless, watching the video I felt butterflies in my stomach, maybe you think I'm being dramatic but growing up with the dream of real-time raytracing, rendering scenes on a shitty laptop for whole nights as a kid and then seeing this? It's really something...

I think this is brilliant and inspiring. Part of growing as a musician is experiencing challenging music and learning to sit with it. It’s always good to encounter the unexpected.

@lisyarus I wonder if this paper is related to what you're trying to accomplish: diglib.eg.org/items/cb69c659…. They use a hierarchical hash data structure (based on an Octree) to cache illumination information.

You know what, fuck hash tables, I'll throw a flat array and I'll store per-voxel probe indices into that array. That's a ton of extra memory but at least it's collision-free by design. Still far from trivial with all the atomics and probe allocation/recycling, but manageable.

@ChShersh @davepl1968 You were right if in your original statement you'd have said _tail_ recursion. Which is the example you're giving here.

It's "literally" impossible to do recursion with a JMP instruction. That's just called a loop. Recursion requires an input and an output, and you're going to need a stack and to be pushing data onto it and adjusting that stack pointer, and so on.
