@SeaSpitfires 112th LAA Battery RCA was re-roled to rockets from anti-aircraft duties on 9 October, just 23 days before firing these salvos for Infatuate I. They fired the launchers for the first time on 29 Oct near Gheel.

On 1 Nov '44 the Allies deployed the Land Mattress operationally for the first time, bombarding a German Flak battery at Zwanenburg during the assault on Flushing. German PoWs reported it "provoked an immediate tendency to assume the horizontal position". 🎥 IWM A70 237-2 & 3

@SeaSpitfires I am considering skipping the cemetery on future tours I run due to the restrictions. I used to visit the 5 Cdns there, but have not been able to in recent years. Still go to the beach, just not the cemetery. The @ABMC seems to want to restrict access to families of the fallen.

Taps ceremony at the American Omaha Beach Cemetery on Saturday. All the graves were roped off and inaccessible when I was there, part of the ever normalised standard now. All but a handful of the 9,389 men and women buried there are now anonymous. I’m not a fan.

@SeaSpitfires Trolling by the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada. Regimental plaques do tend to plus up their contribution. I was there for its unveiling in 1997, star of the event was Charlie Martin author of "Battle Diary", his wartime memoir and a great read.

@DivebumChef A friend who was serving in the 50s told me that it was not until 1959 that the changed crown was fully distributed with the St Edward's crown of QEII replacing the Tudor crown of KGVI.

The 99 'Lost' Names of Normandy: for the first time since its official opening, more names of servicemen who sacrificed their lives on D-Day and during the Battle of Normandy are engraved onto the Memorial. The 99 men are aged 17 to 48 and represent all military services and include a number of nationalities who served under British command. britishnormandymemorial.org/news-story/the…

April 21 marks what would have been the 100th birthday of Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Her late Majesty devoted more than seven decades to public service, including 70 years as Canada’s Monarch; the longest reign in Canadian history.

One interesting thing I am finding as I gather up my uniforms for my release appointment is how long it’s been since I wore some items. For reference- I haven’t been a SLt in over a decade…and this one even predates the return of the Executive Curl.

@globalwinnipeg On a walking tour of Winnipeg a few years ago our guide took us by this statue. He noted that the sculptor was American and so depicted an American soldier, rather than a Canadian soldier. When it was delivered it was decided to put it up anyway. Move it back to the bank!

Today in 1865, Robert E. Lee surrenders the Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses Grant at Appomattox effectively ending the U.S. Civil War. Grant orders his jubilant men not to cheer. "[They] were now our countrymen," he recalls. "We did not want to exult over their downfall."

@BowersWrites @SweetieCanuck Can that ship even be rearmed... She is sea worthy. I seen him in the Halifax Harbour. But she is so old. And such a old design, that there is no way and hell we can use it in a combat situation. Hell she cant even maintain speed with any of our DDs and FFs. Even our PTs...
