Today was the @MLTAV annual conference! I had the privilege to present and also attended some very inspiring sessions. As always, I loved connecting with colleagues! #mltav #mltav2023

@RogersHistory I bought tickets to Hungary for my beloved uncle’s funeral to attend with my father before I even asked permission from my school. I just told them I was going. They were very supportive but at the time it hadn’t even occurred to me that they could say no to me attending

Receptive bilingualism is a common experience of many children of immigrants (including me!). Very interesting read

the #Matildas have given us everything of themselves over the past few weeks.
now it's up to us to take this gift and turn it into something that lasts.

A reminder that the team that walked onto the field today, representing Australia in the world cup, is the product of government funding for grass roots soccer (World Game) - ten years ago.
Funding for women’s sports full stop was abysmal ten years ago. These young women, have climbed a Mt Everest to secure 4th place. Their country was of little help to them for much of their younger years.
In 10 years time, we may see an Australian Women’s team hold the world cup above their heads in celebration.
AFL is a great game to watch. But if you want the joy of winning at an international level, best you ask governments to divert some of the billions they throw at the AFL into the World Game.

There are too many kids crying in this stadium. But no need. Don’t cry cause it’s over. Smile because it happened. They went further than any 🇦🇺 team before them. They captured our hearts, stopped us all in our tracks. We will never look back from here. We love you. #Matildas

England is a country where soccer is their national sport. Millions play it, and they inject hundreds of millions of dollars into funding it. They’re obsessed with it.
Australia puts most sports funding into other games and although lots of kids play soccer, the game has nowhere near the attention, numbers of players or relentless support here it gets in Europe.
Our #Matildas were regularly playing to just a couple of hundred people until very recently. Their pay and conditions were close to pitiful until just a few short years ago. Many of them played for boy’s teams growing up, or had to move states or even continents just to get the game time they needed to excel. They did it HARD.
And as we’ve said a few days ago, they’ve also faced extraordinary misogyny, ridicule and barriers to success, just for being female.
Yet this women’s team have made history by getting to the final four in a tournament fought by nations where soccer is the reason a lot of them get up in the morning.
The Matildas haven’t failed: they’ve won. They’ve won our hearts and minds and changed sport - especially women’s sport - in this country forever.
They should all be so proud, and we should all be so proud of them.
Now it’s our collective responsibility to force our media to value women’s sport and our governments to fund it properly. We must hold their feet to the fire on behalf of all the little girls who deserve their chance to shine.
Thank you, Tillies.
You’re the fucking best, and you did us all proud. It’s been so much fun watching you play.
Good luck in your final #FIFAWomensWorldCup match.

Japan coming from nowhere to blow the #FIFAWWC out of the water is amazing. I will be shocked if they don't make it to the final at this rate. clinical, organised, have a plan for everyone and everything. amazing team.

@RogersHistory In Australia, we have 3x 2 week holidays throughout the year as well as the 6 week summer holiday. Having the 2 week breaks to look forward to each term keeps me motivated! I can’t imagine not having that. Many private schools also do 1 of their 2 week breaks as 3 weeks.
English

In my full time classroom teacher years (2007-2020 so far), the first 1-2 weeks of the summer holiday was a combo of headaches, low mood, lethargy, exhaustion and even emotion. Maybe it was the body coming out of an unhealthy heightened stress level? The last 1-2 weeks of holiday was a weird mix of dread, anxiety, excitement and looking at pipe dream alternatives to teaching. Got the nice wonderful 2-3 weeks in the middle!
