@SandyofCthulhu The buggest takeaway from this entire thread is that they need to MAKE MUPPET MOVIES!!!! Disney has been sitting on the Henson IP and doing NOTHING with it. Henson should be making a new Muppet movie at least every five years.

All this gibble gabble about Nolan’s Odyssey and NO ONE can see the objectively correct solution. Muppet Odyssey. Everyone would love it. Helen of Troy could be green or blue … or a pig … and no one would care. It’s perfect. All we need is to pick out the token real human. It’s your call …

@DavidModeel @BlackDumpling Not to mention the costume design. Darth Vader. The Stormtroopers. C-3PO. R2-D2. And the space ships - Star Destroyer, Corellian Corvette, Millenium Falcon, TIE Fighters, the Death Star, X-Wing, Y-Wing, A-Wing…

@BlackDumpling I’m old enough to have seen the original theatrical release. The music is great and helps it hold up, but it was the effects that make it stick out in my head.

I'm pretty well convinced Star Wars isn't *that* good. It's John Williams' score that made the difference. Mind you it's not a bad film, but it's not a *great* film. It had some genuinely original concepts, but for the most part it's sword and sorcery in space that just took bits and pieces from a lot of iconic stories that came before. That said had anyone other than John Williams scored this film it would've been forgotten years ago. Consider for a moment just how much of what you remember about Star Wars is linked directly to music, and how much would be lost without it.

@BlackDumpling You also need to have an idea of its time. Look at other movies out in 1977. Look at the science fiction movies that came before it. Star Wars was like NOTHING that came before. It almost single handedly created the big SFX summer blockbuster buster genre.

@feelsdesperate Not to mention that by spending their money on high dollar luxury assets, they’re directly supporting the employment of those people that design and build those yachts, jets, cars, and mansions. And all their suppliers. And the makers of products and services used by employees

When it comes to billionaires my take is the opposite of Leftists: Billionaires SHOULD consume all their wealth: megayachts, English castles, mountains of cocaine, own a dozen homes and 30 cars - do it! Spend it all! The worst thing that can happen is for a billionaire to try to ‘do good in the world’ and shovel money to NGOs for some cause they get excited about. That’s the worst thing that can happen. Charitable donations should be taxed at 500%. A billionaire’s lavish lifestyle poses no threat to me but their misguided ‘good intent’ is absolutely cancerous and potentially civilization ending.

@mattvanswol A - 90-100 B - 80-89 C - 70-79 D - 60-69 F - <60 In HS that was for your absolute grade. In college, they curved the class average to be a C. Georgia Tech was a rough school, and the tests were purposely difficult even given the high difficulty of the material.

@elonmusk It’s not terribly surprising. That the Senate seats are blue is a pretty much a given. For house seats, there aren’t many available. ME: 2 NH: 2 VT: 1 RI: 2 CT: 5 MA: 9 MA and CT I could see potentially having red districts, but there’s not much there for the others.

@Ura_app @ick_real Sometimes the Universe lets you know, repeatedly, in no uncertain terms that it’s not going to allow you to succeed in changing it. Eventually you reach the point of thinking it would have been better to have never existed to begin with, but you don’t have that choice anymore.

Lying under oath matters... unless you are Anthony Fauci. Contempt of Congress matters... unless you are Merrick Garland. Espionage matters... unless you are Eric Swalwell. Insider trading matters... unless you are Nancy Pelosi. Inciting riots matters... unless you are Kamala Harris. Gun laws and tax evasion matter... unless you are Hunter Biden. Mishandling of classified information and destruction of evidence matter... unless you are Hillary Clinton. Paying hush money to an ex-lover matters... unless you are Bill Clinton. Selling government influence, bribery, graft and corruption matter... unless you are Joe Biden. Questioning the integrity of an election you lost matters... unless you are every Democrat in the past 30 years. Notice a pattern?

@SandyofCthulhu My friend group played CoC periodically as a part of our RPG rotation. We had one guy (player) who refused to play by sanity rules he argued till he was blue in the face that once you’ve initially seen a creature your mind should accept it exists and no more sanity penalty.

The number one most famous mechanic in the Call of Cthulhu game is Sanity. There's a lot of details to it but ultimately what it means that you can see or hear or learn something so awful it hurts your mind. Now when I was first designing Call of Cthulhu, I wanted to make it as much like the stories as possible (that's always my first step in a game - to put theme first). And in Lovecraft's tales, the heroes would faint dead away, panic, go into hysterics, become lunatics, and so forth, so I wanted this in the game. It seemed like a good fit for a horror game. So I assigned the players a good amount of Sanity (typically 50+ points), and each monster could inflict a potential Sanity loss. In my naivete, I thought that this would just be an additional threat for a monster. You know - "A Dark Young can hit you with tentacles, cast spells, and also cost you up to 1d10 Sanity. Boo!" 1/3

@CoachHogan25 @Rich_Cooper In a fire situation your wife has agency, and presumably enough lived experience to be able to help herself. Your children far less so. Especially if they’re young. You absolutely save the kids and trust your wife to do what she can to escape herself.

@Rich_Cooper You save your wife over your mother. It is disordered to prefer your mother to your wife. As for the wife vs kids debate you would need to make a probability judgement as to who would be more likely to escape without your assistance.

@aakashgupta When my body is left to its own devices with no need of any particular time to wake up generally wakes me up after about 6 hours of sleep. It’s only when I’m exceedingly exhausted that it will keep me asleep for 7 or 8 hours.

The scariest finding in this paper: the subjects couldn't tell it was happening. UPenn ran this study on 48 healthy adults. One group slept 8 hours. Another slept 6. Another slept 4. For 14 straight days. They tested cognitive performance every 2 hours from 7:30am to 11:30pm. The 6-hour group's reaction times, working memory, and sustained attention deteriorated on a near-linear curve. By day 14 they were performing at the same level as someone who hadn't slept at all in 48 hours. The 4-hour group hit that threshold by day 6. Here's the part that should unsettle everyone who thinks they "do fine" on 6 hours: the subjects' self-reported sleepiness flatlined after the first few days. Their brains kept getting worse. Their perception of how impaired they were stopped updating. The cognitive decline was invisible to the person experiencing it. The researchers found a hard threshold. Any wakefulness beyond 15.84 hours in a day produces cumulative neurobiological cost. That cost compounds every single day you exceed it and does not reset with a weekend of sleeping in. About 35% of American adults sleep less than 7 hours a night. 40% of those get 6 hours or less. In 1942 that number was 11%. We built an entire professional culture around a sleep schedule that this paper says is functionally equivalent to pulling consecutive all-nighters. "I'm fine on 6 hours" is the most common response to sleep research. The first thing chronic sleep debt destroys is your ability to notice chronic sleep debt.
Nicholas Fabiano, MD@NTFabiano

Sleeping <6h a night for 2 weeks reduces cognitive performance equal to 2 nights of total sleep deprivation.
