Dueling might seem barbaric today, but it actually reveals a culture obsessed with etiquette. Duels served a few purposes: -settled disputes -encouraged civility -channeled aggression Unlike in modern times, careless words had consequences…🧵(thread)

One thing I've learned from the response to this thread: however warped you think the average person's historical knowledge is, it's worse. They think that dueling was used primarily (even exclusively!) to settle policy questions in the government. They just know about Hamilton/Burr from watching Broadway - that's the extent of their world model.

The downfall of dueling, though very reasonable at the time, paved the way for many of our issues today We must allow mutual agreement to combat — contrary to popular belief, this is the civilized way to settle conflicts!

both Philip and Alexander dueled in Weehawken, near the same place as each other, with the same set of pistols from John Church, and they both use the dueling tactic of deloping (french for Throwing Away)

“Duelling Apparatus, for Gentlemen of weak nerves.” How many timid Duellists must have wished for a device like this? Once strapped in you can’t flinch, falter or flee, and — if you're not feeling up to it — your Seconds can even pull the trigger for you, hiding behind a tree.

@RegencyNights You’re right. There was a sort of unspoken rule that you didn’t shoot to kill. You certainly did not aim! It all had to be done with aristocratic insouciance. & shooting NOT to kill must be discreet. (Deloping is the term) But still giants like Alexander Hamilton were shot & died

In pistol duels, a common practice was for both parties to intentionally miss, therefore fulfilling the duel without bloodshed—this was called “deloping”. It could be seen as dishonorable, though, because it implied your opponent was not worth shooting.
