@calvinrobinson Lovely roast. Sadly a luxury we can no longer afford. With the pension increase being what it is we have to choose between the wine cellar and Sunday roasts. The golf and Margaret's horse riding are non-negotiable. 🇬🇧

Yes, the UK produces jet fuel domestically—but only enough to cover ~20–22% of its own demand. The rest (~78%) is imported. UK refineries (e.g., Fawley, Humber/Phillips 66, Stanlow, Pembroke) produce kerosene/jet fuel as part of normal crude refining, and some co-process sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). However: Domestic jet production has halved since pre-pandemic levels and fell further in 2025. Major recent closures hurt capacity: Grangemouth (Scotland's only refinery) fully closed in 2025 after transitioning to an import terminal; it had supplied ~97% of Scotland's aviation fuel and ~20% of overall UK fuel production. Lindsey also closed. Result: UK is a net importer of jet fuel (and most refined products), with imports from 23+ countries in 2024/2025. Top sources included Kuwait, Netherlands, Belgium, US. Other European countries produce far more domestically relative to need. France, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, and others have large, modern refining sectors that produce jet fuel locally. Europe as a whole is still a net importer of jet/kerosene (especially post-Russia sanctions), but the UK's position is worse due to more refinery exits and higher per-capita aviation demand (Heathrow is Europe's busiest). Northwest Europe acts as a refining/import hub, so the UK imports via those routes too.Recent SAF mandates (UK requires 2% blend in 2025, rising over time) add a tiny bit of domestic "green" jet fuel, but it's negligible (~1–2% currently) and mostly imported anyway.Overall assessment: Not exaggerated in the big pictureThe post is a reasonable warning based on real-time shipping data and structural weaknesses (refinery closures + Gulf dependence). It's not "panic-mongering"—Argus, Reuters, FT, and others are sounding similar alarms about the UK's exposure right now. However, full "problem" (e.g., widespread flight cancellations) is more likely measured in months of tightening supply/prices than literal weeks until planes stop flying. Alternatives exist (US Gulf Coast, Nigeria reroutes already happening, higher-cost Asian/Indian sources), but they'll be more expensive and logistically strained. Stocks + demand management (e.g., fewer flights) provide a buffer. This is a classic energy security issue: decades of refinery rationalisation + sanctions + geopolitics = vulnerability. The UK (and Europe) can mitigate via diversification, but it's not painless or instant.

The last known jet fuel shipment from the Middle East bound for the UK is due to dock on Thursday. One ship. The Libyan-flagged Maetiga, loaded with jet fuel from Saudi Arabia, currently off the coast of Portugal. After that there are currently no other UK-bound cargoes from the region visible on the water. The UK phased out Russian jet fuel supplies and replaced them with fuel routed through the Strait of Hormuz. That route is now effectively closed. Europe sources around 40% of its jet fuel through the Hormuz chokepoint. The UK is particularly exposed, both directly and through imports routed via the Netherlands and Belgium. The maths on this is simple. If that ship docks Thursday and nothing follows, airlines have weeks not months before this becomes their problem. The UK government has told travellers not to worry yet. That is usually the moment to start doing something. Follow me to stay informed

@kobylka @NeilMcCoyWard It’s better than nothing and should be put out there that we actually do produce a percentage of jet fuel rather than import 100%

@khalsahodl @NeilMcCoyWard Will mean ramping up more imports from the yanks, but ships seem to be flowing through Hormuz late this afternoon,so fingers crossed all will be well

The last tanker of jet fuel from the Middle East to the UK arrives Thursday. After that: Nothing. Worth noting that the UK normally has 8 Middle Eastern jet fuel cargoes in transit at any time. Now, this is the last one. Jet fuel prices are already double pre-war levels & industry experts say airlines will start feeling the squeeze by end of April. The government says "book your summer holidays as normal." That advice is going to age very badly.
