Congratulations to Chris Evans on his appointment as Australia's inaugural Anti-Slavery Commissioner. This is a welcome step. But - as I highlight in today's @smh - with 41,000 people estimated to be living in modern slavery in Australia it is clear that we need to do more.

Today I announced the appointment of Chris Evans as the first Australian Anti-Slavery Commissioner. The establishment of the Anti-Slavery Commissioner delivers on our election commitment and builds on our efforts to combat the scourge of modern slavery, at home and abroad.

Really pleased to meet Australia’s inaugural Anti-Slavery Commissioner, Mr Chris Evans, who will work with government, business, civil society and the broader community to help fight modern slavery and improve transparency in supply chains.

"Any migrant worker exploitation is unacceptable." according to Immigration Minister Andrew Little. He says they aim to check 15% of employers across the industry, and the system has been ramping up, with roughly 300 people employed to check on accredited employers.

@andrewjgiles The situation of locally engaged staff (Australian citizens and PRs) working for foreign Consulates & Embassies in Australia also needs to be addressed as this staff have no legal right to negotiate their wages and working conditions with their employer, a foreign government

I spoke to 7.30 about the culture of migrant worker exploitation in Australia and the Albanese Government's commitment to cracking down on exploitation and ensuring that companies aren't exploiting visa holders and undercutting Australians' pay.
