@DrCameronMurray Would be interesting to look at utilisation rates as well - suspect part of the answer may be focus on increasing bed utilisation for efficiency (high 90s % is the current norm) over having lots of spare capacity.

Does anyone know why all the rich countries seem to have declining numbers of hospital beds (per capita) over the past 30 years or so? Is it shorter hospital stays? Alternative approaches to non-critical care? Fewer injuries and illness?
