If Keir Starmer had said before the election that he would remove the winter fuel allowance from millions of pensioners, add inheritance to family farms and family businesses, council tax & energy price increases, raise university tuition fees, plaster mass-scale solar panels on thousands of acres of prime farmland despite huge local community objections, spaff £22bn of taxpayers’ money on carbon capture machines, give £3bn a year of taxpayers’ money to Ukraine, betray WASPI women, hang out with BlackRock, pledge a 20% cut in meat & dairy and get exposed for receiving over £100,000 worth of freebies - he almost certainly wouldn’t have won. He duped the electorate. An utterly shameless display of snake oil political salesmanship. And still he lectures all of us in that gratingly sanctimonious manner of his like we are all somehow the problem here.

@premraghvani Are you referring to Q.7? Lots of our pupils came out saying the answer should have been 20n (not 16n), is this what you got?

#alevels2024 So I think Edexcel may have made a mistake on Further Maths - Further Statistics 1... I have just sent a complaint to Edexcel, and figured out what they did to calculate the "show that" expressions

@northwalesstoki @ShaunSmiths @Herring1967 Maybe some fee paying parents have budgeted so very carefully that they can currently afford school fees (and checked they could do so for several years, long before this policy of envy was announced), but are now being thrown a curveball?

@katmgoddard @RogersHistory So should this also apply, for example, to luxury brands of children's shoes/clothes which don't charge VAT on such items? I'm quite sure that these luxury items aren't available to at least 93% of children too...

@stu_gordon @RogersHistory Tax breaks that funding hole has to be filled from somewhere, which means that break is being funded elsewhere in the system.

Not on LBC, but here are my thoughts: 1. VAT on private schools policy is correct IMO. 2. I don't believe there will be a massive surge from private to state as predictors are saying. 3. There is going to be a big drop in student numbers by 2030 in many areas of the country due to birth rate etc, some schools already closing. 4. This is a distraction from there being no teachers left to teach either way.

@katmgoddard @RogersHistory That still doesn't explain how state school parents are "funding" private school fees, though? ZERO money goes from taxes towards private schools. And fee paying parents don't get a tax break? I understand they don't pay VAT on fees, but that's not the same thing......

@stu_gordon @RogersHistory Tax break is being used to give 7% access to a level of privilege that is not being offered to 93% of kids. Those 7% of parents could choose to send their kids to the schools they are funding through tax, that 93% don't have access to the schools they are funding tax breaks for.

@katmgoddard @RogersHistory I don't understand this take on things. Surely the parents of private school pupils are the ones helping to subsidise the schooling of state school pupils through their taxes? Could one argue that if you're going to introduce VAT on fees, it'd be fair to give a tax break, too?

@RogersHistory Think it's also important to point out that this isn't about introducing a new tax but ending a tax break that is being paid in part by the 93% whose kids currently attend state school
