i see guys post about how dating apps are impossible for straight men now, and i think about my brother who’s just a regular guy and has no issue finding dates on apps, but then i imagine an incel asking how tall my brother is and i say “he’s 6’2” and then the incel strangles me

Tbh I don’t exclusively go on dates with doctors, lawyers, engineers SOLELY because of their money. It’s also because they can keep up with me intellectually. The last time I accepted a date based on looks alone (6’2, athletic build, and handsome mid 20s) I got the ick because he didn’t know rabies was a mammalian disease. 🤣

the engineers being sought after now are not the same ones from 3 years ago. before, if you could grind leetcode and had a rough handle on system design, you were basically set. leetcode is irrelevant now. here is what actually matters: - knowing system design fundamentals so your agent can't bullshit you - being an exceptional PR reviewer. reviewing is harder than writing net new code - building deep business context so you can evaluate plans produced by agents indexing on taste, deep system design, and curiosity has never been more important in engineering
David Sacks@DavidSacks

Q: How are job postings for software engineers rising rapidly despite AI agents automating coding? A: Because there’s far more code to manage than ever before. We’re already seeing a 14x YoY increase in GitHub commits, and it’s accelerating. AI has dramatically lowered the cost of writing code, so it’s now being used across far more businesses, applications, and use cases. We’re at the beginning of a massive productivity boom driven by the proliferation of bespoke software throughout the entire economy. Coding has been AI’s breakout use case this year. The fact that it’s increased demand for software engineers — rather than decreased it — should call into question the entire “AI will cause mass job loss” narrative.

@0xNomad_ @maidulll I liked leetcode bc my first job was a garbage government contractor that didn't push me to even 10% effort. leetcode let me land big tech jobs by proving there is skill despite the situation

I have never ever considered leetcode in hiring, it's honestly a bullshit gauge of talent. I prefer having conversations about what people have built and actually understand. In 15 minutes I'll usually start hearing a few "well....I haven't worked with that" and immediately know someone is really stretching their resume.

my take on the h1b thing is its middle managers justifying their continued existence with butts in seats and hourly billing grift. That being said there is a genuine labor shortage in the US and workforce participation is at all time lows get off your butt instead of complaining.

People talk about this like there are software mines in the santa clara valley and you just need somebody to lift the shovels to dig it out. People's brains are the raw material that software is made of. It's only made here because the people who make it can immigrate here.

@RahulChels @ashishxx_ probably 350 total comp, not salary. so 16 weeks of ~200k salary = 60k. plus vest of around 40k. so yeah pretty much. only NYC laid off employees get the august vest though (bc theyre still "employed" through august 15)

College batchmate at Meta (NYC) got laid off in the latest round with an eye watering severance. But the company is keeping her on the books for 3 months only after which her 60-day H1B deadline will be triggered. Pretty decent cushion.

@ashishxx_ @RahulChels for NYC it would be 4 months salary (3 of which are full benefits) + august RSU vest + 2 wks salary per year of tenure

NYC has a 3 month WARN period in which all employees are given garden leave for 3 months. so they're "technically" employed but they're essentially laid off. it only maters in cases like this bc everyone in other states just gets their 4 month severance regardless, so pay is same

This is a categorically insane statement. At $400k/yr as a *salary*, you can live a wonderful life with relatively little stress. Save $8k/mo. After taxes, you’re living on $15k-20k/mo. By 45-50, you have a wonderful nest egg of $4M-$8M. You’ve lived a life better than 99%+ of the world on your way to it. And, since Meta does love to give out options & incentive units, they likely have another $1M-$2M in stock, which is just the cherry on top of the rich life sundae. For 99% of the population, that is a better life than what they’ll ever experience. And, the best part of the deal is that this high W2 salary provides them optionality for anything else. If they want to build a side project? No problem. If they want to angel invest or advise startups? They have the resources & a resume tailor-made for it. If they want to travel, enjoy life, raise a family? Can do. The notion that every job is a jail sentence simply must go. The reality is that 98% of the population is better off working for someone else.
ₕₐₘₚₜₒₙ@hamptonism

This might be a hot take but I know someone at meta who makes $400k a year and is quite literally capped at that number for life - likely will never get a promotion strong enough to change that. 9-5 until they’re what, 50? This is not living. No matter the salary.

I hope with fewer people managers in big companies, the culture of treating ICs as grown adults comes back. This culture of unnecessary regular 1:1s is so soft & therapy-coded. Be an adult, sort it out by communicating as needed.
