Namaste Honourable Minister of Education Ji @EduMinOfIndia Humbly requesting for your kind attention regarding the issue of incorrect and misleading assertion about “Swastika”, a sacred symbol for billions of Buddhists, Hindus and Jains. The NCERT text book describes the symbol in Nazi era Red banners as “Swastika”. However, the Nazi era literature described the symbol as “ Hakenkreuz” and the word “Swastika” is not mentioned by them. The textbook titled “ India and the contemporary World-I , Text book in History for Class IX", First Edition- March 2006, Reprinted December· 2024’", page 57 makes assertions as follows. “ Hitler devised a new style of politics. He understood the significance of rituals and spectacle in mass mobilisation. Nazis held massive rallies and public meetings to demonstrate the Support for Hitler and instil a sense of unity among the people. The red banners with the Swastika, the Nazi salute, and the ritualised round of applause after the speeches were all part of this spectacle of power " Unquote: Following points for your kind attention: 1. In response to my RTI application , NCERT replied that the textbook does not mention the source of the assertion. The reply also stated that “the department consulted some standard books which all refer to "Swastika". It is known as " HakenCreuz" in German.” 2. This is factually incorrect and misleading. Nazi era primary sources, including Mein Kampfein ,the book authored by Adolf Hitler, does not mention the word “swastika” and instead, they use the word “Hakenkreuz” for describing the Nazi era hate symbol. 3. There is a distinct difference in appearance and symbolism between “Hakenkreuz” and “Swastika”. The Hakenkreuz is depicted as a black, right-facing, tilted cross on a white circle with a red background, symbolising fascism, and the Holocaust. In contrast, Swastika is often depicted as left-facing or upright representing prosperity, peace, and good luck in Dharmic faiths, used for thousands of years globally by Hindus, Jains and Buddhists 4. I had pointed out to NCERT that, in his book titled “The Buddhist Swastika and Hitler's Cross: Rescuing a Symbol of Peace from the Forces of Hate”, Reverend Dr. Toshikazu Kenjitsu Nakagaki traces the possible origins of the mistranslation of "Hakenkreuz" as “Swastika” to a story published in The New York Times during the year 1933. 5. Wrongfully associating the word "Swastika" with "Hakenkreuz" has a huge impact for Hindus, Buddhists and Jains who revere it as a symbol of well-being and peace . Globally, such wrong association creates a potentially dangerous environment for Hindus, Buddhists and Jains by giving an impression that their religions are somehow tied to Nazi ideology. For example, the NY State Senate bill 2019- SS6648 has a stated purpose as follows: “ Requires instruction regarding symbols of hate, including the swastika and the noose, to be incorporated into the curricula for grades six through twelve.” Hence, this is an issue which has impact not just in India, but globally for billions of Buddhists, Hindus, and Jains. As our Honourable Prime Minister Ji has highlighted the importance of decolonisation , our country’s institutions like NCERT need to set an example in decolonisation and ensure that incorrect and misleading assertions are not taught to young school students. I am in communication with NCERT on this issue but as on date there is no resolution. I am concerned that the next academic year is approaching soon and we need immediate action and resolution to ensure that during next academic year, many millions of students are not taught these incorrect and misleading assertions. Hence, humbly requesting your kind intervention to ensure this issue is brought to an early resolution before the next academic year begins. Tagging @ncert as a matter of courtesy since they are mentioned in the post.

NK, Mechanical engineer, writes from Mumbai, “Having read your books Bhishma Nirvana, The Mystery of Arundhati, and Prachin Bhartiya Khagolvidnyana, I am convinced that verifying the clues from scriptures using advanced astronomical software is the definitive way to verify the deep antiquity of the Ramayana and Mahabharata. In my limited understanding of research methodologies, It makes sense to me how you verify these celestial alignments with multidisciplinary research, such as the Y-chromosome genetic dip paralleling the Mahabharata war and Sugriva’s descriptions matching ancient paleogeography. If these were a theory only, all the multidisciplinary clues would not align so well with each other and point to concerete conclusions. The fact that they do align is indeed profound. In my opinion, your rigorous approach truly places our scriptures in front of the world not as mere mythology, but as history verified to the best extent possible by science.” subbupublications.com/product/noec/
