I know a girl who has made the seamless transition from the Labour Party to supporting the Greens and everything they stand for. She’s anti-Israel, anti-capitalist, she hates the Tories and Reform, and thinks border controls are racist. You name it, she’s in. But I also happen to know that she lives in a nice flat in an expensive area, has amazing holidays and meals out….and she never pays for any of it. She’s more than happy to let others fund it all (with not the slightest interest in how they have had to earn that money). I guess that makes her the epitome of the modern socialist.

So the mask slips. The Mail on Sunday says 70 Britons- tourists, expats and even cabin crew- have been locked up in Dubai and Abu Dhabi for taking videos and photos of drone and missile attacks. The PR is that the UAE is a safe and glamorous land of sunshine and opportunity. The reality is that it’s a dictatorship where even receiving a photo can carry a sentence of up to 10 years. Some of the 70 have been released on bail, but because they have had their passports confiscated they cannot leave the Emirates. If they are expats whose work visas expire in the meantime they will not be able to work and face losing their home. These arrests will have a much longer effect on the image of Dubai than the missiles.

Run out of heating oil, can’t afford to buy more, rent due, can’t afford to pay full amount, car running out of fuel, can’t afford to get diesel ! Many thanks to the government! They can Fûck right off!
