It's 'poem in your pocket' day in America, where people are encouraged to share a poem they like for the end of poetry month over there. One by Iya Kiva from me, from her bilingual collection Silence Dressed in Cyrillic Letters (trans. Amelia Glaser and Yuliya Ilchuk).

Today, we celebrate Iya Kiva's birthday, a Donetsk-born poet, translator, and journalist whose life and work have been reshaped twice by the russo-Ukrainian War. Now she lives in Lviv. Kiva's poetry has become a vital example of resistance that speaks to the world about Ukraine’s struggle by demonstrating the profound spiritual resilience and strength of its people in the face of imperial aggression. Her masterfully crafted poems carry multiple meanings, reaching in different directions across borders and cultures. Athletes participating in the Olympic Games are not faceless instruments for measuring strength, speed and technical skill, but above all people who represent their countries and share the values of the people of their countries. Vladyslav Heraskevych's act is about dignity.

Do you even realize who was depicted on the helmet of banned Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych (@heraskevych )? They were Ukrainian athletes — women, men, and even children — who hoped to be part of the Olympic Games this year or someday in the future. But they never will be. They never stood a chance against Russian missiles. Vladyslav wanted to give them that chance — to carry them with him, to be their guide after death, and to honor their memory. Commemorating fallen athletes should have been among the most respected acts in the eyes of the International Olympic Committee. But not in a world shaped by injustice, Russian money, a loss of values and faith, a lack of dignity, and the absence of basic professional ethics. They told him to change the helmet and everything would be fine — to reject the memory of fellow athletes. He’d get his gold medal and the prize that came with it. After all, he had trained his entire life for this. But he chose dignity and values over a gold medal. This is how ancient legends were born in the past. Now they are returning to a world that has lost its soul. And these legends have Ukrainian faces.
