Locals have used Iran, Iranshahr ("Empire of the Iranians"), or Iranzamin ("Land of Iran") since at least the Avestan era (~1000 BCE or earlier) and prominently from the Sasanian period (3rd century CE onward). "Persia" was always the external Greek/Latin exonym (from the Pars region). In 1935, Reza Shah simply asked the world to switch to the endonym Iran.

Iranians fully deserve honorary Ayran status right alongside the Japanese.
