Right on time for the holidays: got my copy of @unmeshjoshi's "Patterns of Distributed Systems". Can't wait to dive into this one 🤓.

@harshmadhusudan If this is possible, it’s a game changer for electric vehicles. Range has been always a limiting factor for many people to consider electric

1,200-km range, 10-min charge: Toyota near solid-state battery breakthrough. business-standard.com/industry/auto/… Mass production of solid-state batteries may start by 2027 or 2028. Automaker recently said it has reached a breakthrough that could halve the cost and size of these batteries.

@OliverNybroe We rotate the servers every few weeks to apply security patches and upgrades. This takes roughly 15 minutes. P99 dropped from 900ms to 300ms. Deployment time is more or less the same.

One month since switching from Lambda to EC2. Cost savings are hundreds of thousands of dollars on annual basis. We haven't used reserved instances yet, and I'm convinced that by moving a few more endpoints from PHP to Go, we could reduce the number of instances to half.

My first job was building SaaS (I'm so old that they were called ASPs back then). The database was our biggest problem. So I spent days, nights, and weekends on this for years. Our DB vendor kept telling us, "Look, no one else is doing what you do. We are not built for this." 24 years and many SaaS companies later, and DBs barely changed! DBs are *still* not built for this, and engineers *still* spend days, nights, and weekends making DBs work for their SaaS. Enough is enough. Let's fix this once and for all.

📊 You're testing the business logic of your database-backed application. For your DAOs (if you have any), do you mock them (e.g. with Mockito), manually create fake implementations (e.g. based on collections), or keep them as-is (e.g. using Testcontainers to spin up a DB)?

Crazy thought, I know, I know--but how about we accept that both microservices and monoliths have their place?

Question to folks who use @springboot in production - which message broker do you use, if any? RabbitMQ, Kafka, SQS, Kinesis, JMS, something else?

@gunnarmorling It depends on many other backend systems API interacts with. But typically I target for < 100 ms

Which response times do folks typically aim for these days for user-facing services they run? Say, "p99.9 < 50 ms" -- would that be typical? Ambitious? Lazy? Would love to learn about common practices for tracking and managing API performance 🤓.

Randomly failing tests are a huge killer of motivation and spirit in a team. You may not be able to get rid of them all at once, but you should have a strategy for getting there in a timely manner. E.g. "Every Friday, everyone fixes one flaky test, by stabilizing or deleting it".

Cross-shard joins in distributed datastores are like that one weird uncle at family parties: nobody really loves them, but then, it just wouldn't be a good party without them.
