It's wonderful to see a whole lot of Indic models at the AI summit as India forges ahead along the path to AI sovereignty. Prof Kamakoti was optimistic about this when we met him a couple of months ago. This is really happening! #BharatiyaLLMs yourstory.com/2026/01/ai-sov…

If last year’s Budget was about loosening the purse strings to revive demand, this year’s is about building supply-side strength, resilience, and long-term capabilities amid an increasingly unstable global economic order. @sriramvasan writes @jarshadnk yourstory.com/2026/02/a-budg…

In conversation with @YourStoryCo , @iitmadras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti presents a bold, nation-centric vision for the institute—one that places innovation, employment generation, and equitable access to education at its core. For him, institutional success is ultimately defined by meaningful societal impact. Since assuming office in 2022, Prof. Kamakoti has pursued a fast-paced, outcome-driven agenda, positioning Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E) as a strategic priority. Under the IIT Madras 2021–27 roadmap, the institute aims to support 100 deeptech startups annually, incubate five high-impact technologies each year through the Research Park’s 10X programme, and operationalise a dedicated ₹100-crore I&E fund. The results are tangible: 104 startups incubated in FY25, over 500 active incubatees valued at ₹53,000 crore, and 417 patents filed under the ‘Patent a Day’ initiative. Beyond startups, Prof. Kamakoti views IIT Madras as a national catalyst for job creation, encouraging students to emerge as founders and leaders rather than only job seekers. Central to his philosophy is “Anaivarukkam IIT Madras” — IIT Madras for all. Through online BS programmes, SWAYAM and SWAYAM Plus leadership, school outreach initiatives, and AI-driven education research, the institute is working to remove barriers to access and inclusion. With a strong focus on sovereign, frugal, and application-driven AI, coupled with translational research and industry collaboration, IIT Madras continues to turn knowledge into impact—aligned with India’s journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047. Nation comes first to Prof Kamakoti, who has been conferred the Padma Shri for 2026. 'Positive impact to society' is the success metric he lives by, as he aims to make quality IIT education accessible to all. YourStory spoke to him earlier this month. yourstory.com/2026/01/innova…

We keep hearing this all the time: 'India lacks AI sovereignty compared to China and US.' But V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras is unfazed. It will happen, he says. "India will have its own AI models, but we must use them carefully." @iitmadras @jarshadnk yourstory.com/2026/01/ai-sov…

Day 8. Most of yesterday afternoon and night was zero wind and flat glassy seas. We drifted slowly south-west with the current. This morning a gentle north-eastern wind is allowing some direction at 1.5 to 2.0 knots. We saw a spectacular moonrise last night. It was so bright that it looked almost like a sunrise (the moon was more yellow than silvery). As expected our fresh rations are now exhausted and we will run on dry rations from here. Had Gujarati Thepla with mango pickle for breakfast - it is clear why it was invented. We hope to cross half way point tomorrow evening. With hot blazing sun and no wind, off duty crew retire under the deck to hold to get a much deserved rest. Here is what it looks like. Also a snap of skipper Vikas reading Ocean of Churn ....

In an exclusive interview with YourStory, Dr Tamaswati Ghosh, CEO of the IIT Madras Incubation Cell (IITMIC), discusses how IITMIC is powering India’s next wave of deeptech innovation—nurturing startups across AI, quantum, fintech, e-mobility, spacetech, sustainability, and more. Since 2013, IITMIC has incubated 500+ startups, enabled a combined valuation of ₹53,000+ crore, supported 700+ patents, and helped create 11,000+ direct jobs. From Agnikul Cosmos preparing for its commercial launch to unicorns like Uniphore and leaders like Ather Energy, Planys, Mindgrove, and ePlane, IITMIC’s founders benefit from deep R&D support, faculty-led mentorship, early-stage funding pathways, and long-term institutional backing. Notably, 61% of founders come from outside the IIT ecosystem, and 28% of all startups have women co-founders—reflecting an increasingly diverse deeptech landscape. With strong industry partnerships, access to early pilots, and a culture that encourages students, alumni, and faculty to become founders, IITMIC continues to accelerate India’s deeptech ambitions—turning lab innovations into globally relevant companies and helping build technologies that matter.
