Hi born and raised NYC resident here. How is this bad? Maybe cause like I haven't seen an annual salary in years thanks to job market being so shitty and me being entirely freelance. So...isn't that a normal wage? I make barely 15K a year and I make it work. Really just curious.

@swiftxstark @rendy_jones My groceries and phone plus eating out occasionally and buying pot/cigs sometimes and taking ubers and some streaming services and gym membership all come out to less than $1500 a month… $2500 + $1500 is $4000 which is about the take home on 65k and less than the take home on 72

@jameswheaties @rendy_jones median means that 50% are priced that way and up. factor in the housing crisis here and most ppl won’t be able to nab those + ppl are starting to offer more than the asking price to grab them. and 2500 is 65% their earnings after taxes. what about food? savings?

@swiftxstark @rendy_jones Median doesnt mean you cant find cheaper than that. I just looked up apartments in Brooklyn online and theres a significant amount up for rent with fine space/amenities that are under $2500 and in fine neighborhoods within 30 minutes to an hour of the city…

@jameswheaties @rendy_jones The median 1bd in Manhattan is 5k, it’s just under 4k in Brooklyn. That’s 48-60k/year in rent. So then you get roommates and you barely have space in a bad part of town. Groceries are expensive so don’t eat often. You can ofc make it work but let’s not say it’s not generally bad

@rendy_jones If youre looking to live “comfortably” (nice apt space, able to eat out often, not having to watch ur pockets etc) then its bad, but its not an impossible salary to live off of in the city especially if you can find cheap rent. I think theres ppl who could probs budget better 😬

@AmrcnFricassee @gothichijabi Bc as rent skyrockets and people move to the other boroughs, guess what happens? Those places become insanely expensive too! LIC, Williamsburg, Dumbo, DT Brooklyn are all crawling towards median prices of 3500-4k. Bushwick is next. Then what?
