He could have gate-checked it or had it placed in the pilot's wardrobe closet. It can't have a seat due to safety reasons—like slamming on the brakes during a rejected takeoff, where the cello would slam into the person in front. If it doesn't fit in overhead or under the seat, no go for takeoff and landing. Safety first.
