Why is it JD Vance saying all these things? It's not quite for the same reason that Vice Presidents have often been viewed as a bit goofy or dumb. You see, the role of a Vice President, in realpolitik, is often to float ideas that the administration might have to distance itself from. It's a good short term tactic, but it's dumb in the grand scheme of things, because it makes your VP a lot less electable when you're out. The Trump administration is smarter than that. One of Trump's greatest talents is brand-building. He knows what his voters want, and has no need to use his Vice President as a canary in a coal mine. But he's using this distancing effect to another purpose. More than one, in fact. Vance's role is to say things that Trump knows will be wildly popular with his voter base at home, but very unpopular with our European, ah... "allies". What this means is that abroad, Vance is Bad Cop, who softens the vassals up for Trump to come in and negotiate. He's ideal for this role because he's a highly intelligent and eloquent speaker who can address the effete intellectual European leaders in their own language. At home, this raises support for the administration in general, but also specifically positions Vance for a 2028 run by showing him off as a particular combination of toughness, intelligence, and relatability. As someone who is willing to point out the obvious thing that everyone is thinking, to powerful people who don't want to hear it. He appears to have been selected for precisely this purpose. And watching him puncture the entitled, autocratic European political class has been a pleasure to be savored slowly, like fine wine.
