My father was a POW in Korea, it was no comedy, it was brutal. He loved to watch this show and eventually related a story about the prisoners getting one over on the guards, who were actually Chinese soldiers. One of the POW's was an Asian man, from Hawaii, Clarence was his name. Clarence wrapped a scarf over his head, stripped down, and stood out in front of the barracks with his legs crossed, one in front of the other, with his manhood tucked behind. From a distance, he appeared to be a Korean peasant woman, which is what the guards across the yard mistook him for, as he stood out in front of the barracks. The guards started yelling and rushed to intervene. Clarence ducked inside, changed back into his clothing and rushed out the back door. Meanwhile, the rest of the prisoners had assembled behind the barracks, and had made several snowballs each, and, at the signal, began a barrage of icy snowballs over the roof of the barracks, pelting the unsuspecting communists as they made their charge.
Dad spent 28 months in various prison camps, lost a lot of weight, and suffered frostbite that left him with no feeling in large areas of his feet. He was awarded two purple hearts, and was told by a medical officer upon his release that he and most of his compatriots would not live much past 50. My father met my older sister for the first time upon his return from Korea, and went on to live a productive and remarkable life. He passed away in 2023, on my deceased mother's birthday, at age 94, but was just as sharp as ever, and mostly able to take care of himself up until the end. I shared this story with family and friends at his burial at the VA cemetery in Portland, Oregon. I think the hijinks that Hogan's Heroes played on the German soldiers warmed his heart. I miss him.
