Sad news folks, WWII Legend RAF Pilot Ralph passed away yesterday at the age of 102 Legend Rest in eternal peace Ralph Ottey 🫡🙏🙏🙏🙏 @RoyalAirForce @JohnNicholRAF
Irish Ranger (Sevvy)@VeteranIrish

Military History - 100th Birthday - Ralph Ottey - RAF One of Britain's last surviving Caribbean World War Two veterans has celebrated his 100th birthday. Ralph Ottey was just 19 when he left Jamaica to join the RAF in 1944. Mr Ottey, who now lives in Boston in Lincolnshire, celebrated his 100th birthday on Saturday surrounded by friends and family. He said as well as nightly prayers, his longevity was down to doing sit-ups for an hour every day, including on his birthday. The veteran's daughter Lesley Morrison said: "I feel relieved that he's made it to 100. "Secondly, I'm moved by the number of people who wanted to celebrate. I'm totally bowled over." "The amount of love in the room is something special," she added. Mr Ottey celebrated his birthday with friends and family Kamran Sheikh said his great grandfather was "one of the most positive people" he knew. "I feel proud and privileged to celebrate his birthday. His contribution to this country can't be understated. "He's a local celebrity and local hero," he added. Mr Ottey, who was brought up by his grandparents, said his sense of patriotic duty developed while he was still at school. Ralph Ottey joined the RAF aged 19 in 1944 He had originally wanted to become a teacher but instead became one of more than 10,000 West Indians who travelled across the Atlantic to join the fight against Hitler. Mr Ottey first worked as a driver for an officer of 617 Squadron before passing his air crew exam. After leaving the RAF, he applied for a role with a firm of accountants in Boston. Mr Ottey told BBC Look North: "When I arrived for my interview the company director said 'you didn't say you were a Jamaican in your application'. "I replied 'you didn't ask for a Jamaican you asked for a bookkeeper'." Former work colleague Brian Matthews described him as "a great man of character". Aside from work, Mr Ottey played for Boston Cricket Club and earned a fearsome reputation for his fast bowling. Geoffrey Snade, 90, said: "Ralph's fast bowling was devastating. It frightened you to death." IMAGE SOURCE, SHIRLEY HENRY/BBC IMAGE SOURCE, RALPH OTTEY

Today, on the 44th anniversary of the Sheffield being hit by an Exocet I pay my respects to our Shipmate, Bob. A Sheffield survivor who carried the weight of that day until he crossed the bar in 2023 and found his peace. To Bob and the 20 men killed that day RIP, GBNF

I’ve spent the last few days in four countries across the Middle East visiting British Forces on live operations. Our Armed Forces personnel there are working with our allies and partners on the rapidly evolving situation. That’s why I wasn’t in Westminster for yesterday’s vote on the Northern Ireland Legacy Bill. I understand why people feel strongly about this. But the crisis in the Middle East is already affecting us all and it’s ongoing. I served for 24 years. I know what it means to be asked to put your life on the line for this country, and I know what we owe the people who do. For those who served in Northern Ireland, and for their families, this is not an abstract issue. It is about truth, justice, and how we treat those who put themselves on the line for our country. My focus is clear: to make sure the process does not become the punishment, to recognise the difference in law and in fact between those who served the state under orders and those who set out to harm it, and to support veterans and their families in getting as close as possible to truth, reconciliation and justice. I will continue working with colleagues across Government, in private as much as in public, to make sure we get this right. To everyone who served in Northern Ireland, and to the wider veteran community: that commitment does not change. To those that seek to divide the veteran community, question commitment, motivations, honour or question intent, that is your right to do so. And, to those that continue to engage and seek change for justice, let’s keep doing so. We will get there.

Astonishing Senedd Seat projection. Reform: 29% - 37 seats Plaid Cymru - 29% - 36 seats Labour - 12% One of the great earthquakes in political history. Labour’s fiefdom is fallen. National wipeout awaits.

It’s with a heavy heart that we report the passing of David Parrish, a former Royal Marine and one of the most inspirational ultra-runners to ever lace up a pair of boots. David, aged 35, was found on Saturday in a remote mountainous section of Kintail in the north-west Highlands while attempting to set a new record on the brutal 234-mile (376km) Cape Wrath Trail – one of the toughest routes in the UK, snaking through Lochaber, Knoydart, Applecross and Torridon. No suspicious circumstances, just the unforgiving Scottish mountains claiming another soul who loved pushing the limits. David joined the Royal Marines and often spoke about using long-distance running to decompress from the relentless demands of the job. After leaving the Corps he threw himself into the sport: Parkruns, local races, club champion with Dumfries Running Club in 2022, and winner of the Cape Wrath Trail race itself in 2023 – despite only competing seriously for a few years. In 2021 he even walked the entire trail. This latest solo attempt was more than just a personal challenge; he was fundraising for Scottish Mountain Rescue in memory of his close mate, 20-year-old Royal Marine Luke Ireland, who died while running in the Angus mountains back in 2014. Those who knew him described him as a “joyful person and an inspirational ultra-marathon athlete.” The world of endurance running – and the wider Bootneck family – is poorer for his loss. Our thoughts are with David’s family, his running club mates, and everyone who served alongside him. He embodied that classic Royal Marines spirit: tough as old boots, relentless, and always pushing forward – whether on the hills of Scotland or the training grounds of the Corps. Rest easy, David. You’ve earned your final stand-down. Crack on, stay safe out there, and if you’re heading into the hills, look after each other.

Mornin troops. During my absence, it has come to my attention that I have more friends on here than I realised. I had to step away from socials for a while, needed to stop pretending I was alright when I clearly wasn’t. Since 1996, after returning from Bosnia, I have been battling PTSD, compounded by the last 589 days by the absence of my kids. So I had to step away from negativity in its entirety and try and reset and find a better place to try and cope with the constant battles I’m fighting in my head. I felt it was unfair to keep you incredible people who took time to message of your concern. So I’m immensely grateful, humbled and honoured to be followed by such incredible ladies and gents I have following me out there. I will try and bounce back, I’ve run out of LEGO to build, (Amazing for mental health) so I’ll try and dig out some jokes and try and get things back to some sort of normality for you all. Thank you again, and thanks for sticking with me. B. 💂🏻‍♀️👋🏻🇬🇧🍻x.

April 2nd 1982: The Royal Marines throw down their weapons, bending barrels and taking out firing pins before marching out of Government House. Many are annoyed that a battle they are winning has been called off, but Hunt has agreed to the ceasefire to save civilian lives...
