What’s the trade-off between housing people and preserving green space? Melanie Krause presents interesting findings at #ERSA2024. Eg., in high-income countries more residents don’t mean less green space ➡️ are cities able to densify and preserve by building up? #urbangrowth

The UN Statistical Commission has adopted a new definition of urban areas, developed by @DijkstraLewis in collaboration with a raft of IOs. This new definition improves the measurement & comparison of urban and rural phenomena, facilitating analysis and policy-making. #ERSA2024

4/4 Informality isn't always linked to sprawl. And of course, formal development plays a large role in sprawl globally. This complexity suggests more tailored interventions are needed for sustainable urban development. 🏗️🌿 #UrbanGrowth #sprawl #remotesensing

3/4 We found that the impact varies widely across different cities. Informal settlements show 12.8% lower network connectivity in pooled results, indicating sprawl in some cities. 🏘️➡️🛣️❓Yet, in important secondary cities including Arusha and Dodoma, this effect does not show.

Yes, suburban areas have gained population, but depending on what’s “#urban”, urban areas have considerably gained more in Germany! Fortunate to present current work, comparing building-based to other urban-rural classifications at #PAA2024 in Columbus ➡️ tinyurl.com/suburbangrid

Over the last 6 decades, Sub-Saharan #Africa has been among the world’s fastest urbanizing regions. By 2050, the population residing in SSA's #urban centers is projected to exceed 1.26 billion, surpassing today's figures by more than 2.5 times. This accelerated urban growth poses significant implications for the development of a region where over 1/3 of the population lives in extreme #poverty. To fill the gaps on accurate information regarding urban settlements in Africa and overcome differences in official definitions of urban areas, this #research uses digitized maps of buildings footprints from high-resolution satellite imagery. The results reveal that #urbanization is usually higher than official data suggest, and that a doubling of an urban area’s population is associated with a more than doubling of its built-up area. Thanks (!) to @gesis_org, @StefanJuenger for organizing a super rich workshop on „Earth Observation Data in the Social Sciences“. How to use remote sensing data to learn about population growth in urban and suburban areas? I presented upcoming work, showcasing this in Germany.
