The United States last week withdrew from participation in the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development to be held in Sevilla, Spain next week. In remarks to U.N. member states, the U.S. Rep said the following: *We no longer reaffirm the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a matter of course. *We cannot support a global development financing framework that interferes with the governance structures and mandates of the international financial institutions. *We firmly reject the proposals in the outcome document that call for tripling Multilateral Development Banks' annual lending capacity or imply the UN can consider MDB capital increases. Such measures are not only beyond the purview of this conference, but they also risk undermining the foundations of these independent institutions. *On the matter of debt, we must be clear: the proposals that envision a role for the UN in the global debt architecture are unacceptable. Creditors and borrowers themselves should remain at the core of sovereign debt discussions supported by the expert advice of the IMF and World Bank. We reject the injection of third-party interference, including a UN intergovernmental process on sovereign debt or a working group to develop a duplicative set of borrowing and lending principles. *We reiterate that the negotiations related to a UN Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation are inconsistent with U.S. priorities and represent unwelcome overreach. We intend to reject the outcomes of that process and oppose them. *The United States does not support the use of the term “gender” when discussing sex-based distinctions, and we do not support sex-based preferences in any event. We are committed to merit-based decision-making and equality of opportunity. #sabcnews

The people in that Oval Room have no real grasp of how South Africa’s tech landscape is structured. We already have a diverse ecosystem of ISPs and infrastructure players working to bridge the digital divide. Our challenges aren’t due to a lack of satellites, they stem from deeper issues like affordability, digital literacy, and regulatory oversight. Dropping in Starlink as a silver bullet ignores the complexity of our environment and sidelines local innovation. #SAinUSA

Travelled more than 16 HOURS just to be tapped on the shoulder by Johann Rupert like a BOY! This must be the first Minister of International Relations, who participates in an international relations meeting and DOES NOT UTTER A SIGNLE WORD😭

Interesting seeing the contrast in international coverage of Ramaphosa’s visit vs some of the local coverage. The former characterizes CR as having being ‘prepared’, ‘calm’ and qualifies Trump’s claims as ‘lies’ ‘baseless’. The latter tends to catastrophise events, all gloom

Please take note that there are products not subject to new tariffs by Trump. These include some key exports to the United States from RSA, such as manganese, uranium, chrome, coal, fluorspar. Also included is scrap of these materials and stainless steel scrap.

Trump’s tariffs hit African countries hard. Is this the end of AGOA? Lesotho – 50% Madagascar – 47% Botswana – 37% Nigeria – 14% That’s a sharp contrast to AGOA—the U.S. policy that’s long allowed African countries to export duty-free. We raised questions on the future of AGOA, before Trump announced the new tariffs. Catch up on our analysis.
