Over 80 girl children from the Annai Ashram near the airport, a govt-aided home, were transferred following allegations that caretakers had resorted to physical and verbal abuse and showed negligence in matters of healthcare. As a result, the institution has also been stripped of govt subsidies for now The 83 girl children were transferred late on Saturday night to two other homes — Annai Sathya Home in Mathur and Nagammai Children’s Home in KK Nagar. Sources said there are 14 homes across Trichy that cater to children under the age of 18 who are orphans or who have faced neglect, abuse, abandonment, or family breakdown. It is understood that a few days ago, during a routine grievance redressal inspection, the district administration found a girl to be unwell at the home. The child complained of negligence, following which officials inquired with other inmates, sources said. An inquiry was then ordered by district collector V Saravanan and was conducted over two days by district officials. While the management of the institution claimed that the transfer was carried out for “administrative reasons”, a senior district official told TOI “that preliminary investigations revealed that the management had verbally and physically abused the children and had been negligent in providing medical care. Even after warnings and notices were issued, the staff continued to threaten the children for speaking out. Hence, there was no option but to move the children out. Until the management changes its staff, children will not be shifted back and govt subsidies will remain suspended,” the official said. Another source who was part of the inquiry told TOI that no police complaint has been filed yet. “For now, many of the children have examinations, and we wanted to create an atmosphere for them to write well,” the source added. timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/trichy/83…
