🧵Firefighters are being deployed to the same incident over and over again due to underfunding and lack of staff. These conditions are leading to burnout, and with no national standards, firefighters and control staff are being left with inconsistent and inadequate mental health support.

The FBU stands in solidarity with the Freedom Flotilla Coalition volunteers. Israel's blockade of life-saving aid is illegal. The fire engine stocked with PPE and firefighting kit, which FBU members delivered to the West Bank last year, was also detained by Israeli customs. The UK government must step in and end these blockades.

7 year old Zane Gbangbola died in 2014 when floodwater passed through landfill into his family’s home. Surrey FRS detected high levels of hydrogen cyanide in Zane’s home. A 2010 report warned of an “unacceptable risk” of migrating gases from the landfill site - the site has still not been tested.

Ahead of the spending review statement, our message is clear, it is critical that the Spending Review marks a dramatic departure from that austerity approach that has so badly crippled the fire and rescue service and public services generally.
