@Alan_Couzens @inaki_delaparra Thanks Alan! Listened to the podcast on the way home. Much stuff to digest. Thank you for taking the time to reply! I’m subscribed to both yours and Inaki’s Substack 😁.

@tcd209 @inaki_delaparra Indeed. Even more so! A guiding principle and something we cover in the podcast. As Erin so succinctly points out... "If your training doesn't last into your later years... it was all for nothing."

A couple of months back, I wrote a post: “Strength Training for Endurance Athletes -You’re Doing It Wrong.” It sparked… a bit of discussion. And argument. So for this #MSMRL, @inaki_delaparra & I brought in some serious backup: Erin Carson - strength coach to Ironman champions, Olympic medalists, and some of the most durable endurance athletes on the planet. Her message? Most “strength training” for endurance athletes just looks like all their other training - adding fatigue & furthering imbalances. And that’s exactly what it shouldn’t be! If you care about actually getting functionally stronger, more durable, and faster (not just more tired!), this one’s worth your time.

Yuval Noah Harari on meditation: “The key to a good life is to be able to observe reality as it is. To really understand what is the truth about myself and the world without running away to all kinds of fantasies and stories and fictions. I think if you can observe to some degree, reality as it really is, you won’t just be a much better person, you will probably be much more peaceful and happy person because the deep source of our personal and collective problems is in the fantasies that we create and then we mistake them for reality... I practice Vipassana meditation to see reality more clearly. What is reality? What is really happening right here right now… Just observe what is really happening right now without trying to impose any story onto it. Without trying to change it in any way.”

Imagine you roll dice. If they land on double sixes, you make money. All other variations, you lose nothing. Either way, you get to roll again. So what do you do to maximize $? You roll as many times as you can. Now, think about this as sales calls instead of rolling dice.

Anxiety. I realized a great deal of my anxiety came from demanding that life be: 1. Meaningful 2. Joyful Once I realized I was making demands of a universe that doesn’t care, I felt a lot of my anxiety melt away. Restated: 1. “Why does life need to be meaningful?” 2. “Why MUST it be joyful?” Answer: It doesn’t. It’s only a preference. But becoming aware of my demands made me more okay with the times they went unmet, just like a sunny and rainy day. I prefer sun, but I do not demand it. Said differently. I decided it was “okay” for me to accept my present rather than comparing it to a arbitrary ideal that I constantly fell short of. When I started doing this more regularly, my world got a lot quieter. Use if useful.

Most people optimize for the day ahead. A few people optimize for 1-2 years ahead. Almost nobody optimizes for 3-4 years ahead (or longer). The person who is willing to delay gratification longer than most reduces competition and gains a decisive advantage. Patience is power.
