@visegrad24 The Russians invaded, the Russians repeatedly targeted civilians over military targets, now the war has come home to Moscow like it has been in Ukrainian cities for four years and Russians are crying "The humanity!". If they want the war to stop they could leave Ukraine.

@BasedHoopart @eliotranch My point being the number may have gone up an inflation adjusted 30% but they buying power did not, because the rest of the world has gone up by more, their buying power fell about 30%. To keep pace with buying power someone on £20k in 1997 would have to be on around £60k now.
English

@teampantsfire @eliotranch That's why the real wage growth graph I posted accounts for that.

I left school when I was 17 (got 'asked to leave', is the more accurate term I guess). This was 1997.
My unqualified, entry-level salary was more than the average salary now.
My Dad - hopping mad - had sent me to three months of secretarial college and I came out into an £18k job in the local Glaxo factory as an admin assistant.
To give a sense of how long ago this was - my boss would hand-write messages onto sheets of paper and I would touch-type them into this new-fangled 'email' thing she couldn't fathom.
Nearly 30 years later, the equivalent - in purchasing power at least - would be £36k.
A year later, I parlayed that up to a £21k job in the R&D side - still as a PA, 18 years old.
I saved up and went to Taiwan to teach English for a bit. When I got back, I went to London and got a job earning £24k designing presentations and documents in a marketing agency.
I was 20yo.
The equivalent in 2026 would be £46k.
With zero qualifications beyond the ability to touch-type and a certificate saying I could use Word, Excel and PowerPoint, I was on 1.35x the average salary now.
I made a lot of mistakes as a kid. Most of my mates did.
But the economy I lived in allowed the messiness of life to roll out. We could learn, take risks and still be able to live and breathe.
We are failing future generations.
And we have a generation that's already been failed.
Our politicians are addicted to cheap slogans. They want power, not service. The failure of their reality-denying ideologies continues to spiral outwards.
Yes, immigration plays a role. Yes, housing, technology and deindustrialisation play a role. But the state has morphed into a deeply incompetent, self-indulgent boondoggle machine, that spends more time bribing voters than it does serving - or investing in - the country.

The average British salary should be £65,000. It's £34,000. Fifty years of political failure. One plan to fix it. The SDP's Investment State documentary, out now:

@BasedHoopart @eliotranch If a worker was paid £100 in 1990 and could buy 100 chickens for that money, and now earns £1000 and can buy 50 chickens then the country is less wealthy, the number doesn't matter, only the buying power matters.
English

@eliotranch They've stagnated since the GFC but wages are still up by about 30% compared to 1997. I will concede probably much of that growth is from professional salaries rather than entry level salaries which probably haven't moved at all.

During the driver change that car might have needed a quick jet wash of the seat.

Insane crash at the Moto GP, Marquez is conscious in hospital thankfully. Giannantonio was hit by his wheel in the crash and went on to win the race after the restart.

@VoughtCrave Homelander is still a villain, but he's also a victim, of Vought and his insane brother, who is also a victim. It's fucking layered, it's a shame they changed it, but I don't think its worse for the changes.
English

Eric Kripke on why they knew early on they wouldn’t be adapting the infamous Black Noir twist:
“In the comics, [Black Noir is] a clone of Homelander this entire time and is actually the one doing all these horrific things. And again, it's a hell of a twist. But it's like, ‘well, wait, the villain I've been following isn't really the villain?’ And mileage varies, and I'm sure fans are mad I'm not going that way, but that felt not as satisfying to me. I'm like, if I'm going to follow this villain, I want this guy to be the villain. So, I was never really into the clone idea."

@WallStreetApes I've been to Frankfurt multiple times in the late nineties and early 2000's, the change since then is insane.
Politicians act like it has always been so and must remain so, but that's just not true.
Europe is destroying itself.
English

This is what it’s like to tie a camera to your chest and walk down the street in Frankfurt Germany
Visitors say Frankfurt is now like a “GTA server”
“Frankfurt Germany otherwise known as Crackfurt. This place is literally like Gotham City at all hours of the day”
Frankfurt was once an iconic place to visit, it’s a major German financial hub, home to the European Central Bank
Unfortunately now everywhere you look at nothing but imported “Doctors and engineers” making the city so much more “vibrant”, clearly unsafe and full of trash
I figured out why it looks so horrible now
Frankfurt has one of Germany’s highest shares of residents with a migration background, around 57%
They now have a massive violent crime problem
Violent crime, knife attacks, and sexual offenses are being committed by non-Germans, especially from North Africa, Middle East, Afghanistan. Examples include Syrians and Afghans at 10–16x German rates for violent crimes
Disgusting
