He didn’t go looking for cheap signings but the best.
And Getting the best means spending top quality money to sign them. If you want to be at the top and stay at the top, get the best players and pay their fee.
You might not get them in one season but little by little, every position in the squad begins to be filled with the best at what they do and it raises the squads quality higher.
Signing cheap and not the best or quality weakens the club and takes it backward.

Had a few United fans asking about Atalanta’s Ederson. Few thoughts here A well rounded, hard working and technically sound CM - can play as an 8, or more deep lying - has also shown he can play in a two or a three. His recent well taken goal against Milan at San Siro an example of how he can finish well but not a player you’d typically expect lots of goals/assists from (16 goals & 6 assists in 180 appearances for Atalanta) Not someone who’s continually putting the ball at risk but retains it well, has a pass completion of 89% in Serie A 25/26 - he can be progressive though, not just a sideways and backwards player A key attribute is his running power - he covers a lot of ground - for example, average of 11.7km per game in the CL this season, which puts him in the top-20 players. Part of one of the best team performances I’ve seen in a major final when Atalanta beat Leverkusen to win the EL in 2024. Plenty of experience (300+ club career apps) a good age at 26 (27 in July) and consistently available, rarely injured. I believe he’s a player United have a fairly long standing interest in, but with contract up in 2027 now perhaps a good time to strike financially as deal to be done

Few years ago there was a top midfielder in the Premier League but United fans were put off by the £100 million price saying he wasn’t worth it (Declan Rice a league winner)

He brought Lammens, Mbuemo, Cunha, Sesko
So if he got Delap over Sesko he would have had 3 out of 4 success rate
In transfer terms that’s excellent (75%)

Cunha was targeted before he came along - We were after Cunha when he was struggling at Atletico Madrid. He was first on list - then instead we bought Antony. You need to do a deeper dive .Also Cunha 10 goals 2 assists - Rashfords last prem season at United and Villa - 11 goals 9 assists .

I hope this deal get done, it’s a capable player at a fairly OK price.
Ederson got a great motor and can take a huge responsibility on the pitch. He is fairly strong physically and got much better decision making than a Joao Gomes. He is very good technically.
He isn’t a player that makes a title challenging team, that you build around. But if everyone around him is injured and he is the last man standing he can carry a big load in the midfield. Again, he won’t be someone’s Rodri, of course, but if you won’t lose the midfield because you have Ederson and an opponent has Mac Allister or Zubamendi or Guimares. He is ~ at that level.

When we wanted Cunha, we moved properly.
We approached him. He gave us priority.
Same with Mbeumo.
Now somehow people expect Elliott Anderson to give United priority… when the club hasn’t even approached him.
No serious talks.
No concrete move.
Just monitoring the situation and waiting to see whether Man City get the deal done or if it collapses.

This is not a dig at Elliot Anderson or the fans who want him, but I think at some point we have to move on. He’s probably one of the best CM/DMs in the league right now, and at 22 years old, he fits the profile perfectly. But he hasn’t given us priority. Beyond the £120M price tag, he’s been prioritising City. And make no mistake, INEOS did reach out to agree personal terms with him, but he doesn’t want us. Ederson and Matheus Fernandes have given us full priority, and that’s why we’re signing them first.

The more I put Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali side by side, the more I detest the conclusion.
Spoiler alert: Bruno G is the far better player and awarded Newcastle’s Player of the Year, and is likely to be £10-£20m cheaper than his team-mate.
He just happens to be two years older. Although he has another 4 seasons under his belt, it comes down to sell on value and the financials.
Bruno G is a Brazilian international, glowingly recommended by Casemiro to replace him, he’s also a captain and a source of goals and assists. He’s the better passer of the two, and the more complete player.
