The @techroastshow ripped apart a project I poured 24 hours of heart, Gatorade (my “caffeine”), and sheer determination into. This past weekend, I attended @mhacks 2025, my first hackathon as a university student. Walking in, I felt intimidated. Everyone looked like they had it all figured out. But then my team and I started talking about a problem too big to ignore: over 5 billion people worldwide still lack access to safe surgical care, leading to 18 million preventable deaths every year. That number shook me. I couldn’t stop thinking: What if someone I loved was part of that statistic? So, in just 24 hours, alongside @JacobMazelin, @ethangwang, and Yamato, we built Surgent, a prototype for scalable surgical education. Using Snap AR and a custom AI model that listens, sees, and suggests in real-time, we wanted to empower future surgeons, no matter where they live. Did it work perfectly? Not at all. Did we survive the roast? Barely, especially after the project was dubbed "Slop MD" by Jesse. But that’s the beauty of hackathons: you put yourself out there, fail in public, and leave a little braver (and a lot more sleep-deprived). Shoutout to my team for pushing through every “this will never work” momen, and to everyone at MHacks who reminded me why I love building in the first place. More on Surgent soon.
