How bad are AI startup unit economics? Here’s how the AI startup economy works right now: you, the user, pay an application-layer company $1. That company pays $5 to a foundation model provider, which then pays $7 to a hyperscaler, who finally pays $13 to a GPU maker. It’s giving a house of cards, so the question is: how fast can inference costs fall? If fixed-performance inference falls at the rate of Moore’s Law (doubling roughly every 2 years), things could get very rough. But there’s cause for optimism. Algorithmic improvements in inference efficiency do seem to be moving quicker than Moore’s Law. We saw this with DeepSeek. Basically, we are halving costs every 6 to 12 months. We aren’t quite on a knife’s edge here, but it’s definitely something to keep an eye on. h/t @cpaik
