For Japan, we saw what europe did to germany after world war 1 and decided to do the opposite and help you rebuild your society, and this gesture instead of harsher punishment greatly improved relations. For Britian, we only discarded our hatred for each other to save Europe from German aggression and that evolved into a new friendship for years.

We really ought to gut social security entirely. Not all at once, but definitely pick a time where the next batch of taxpayer americans pick up their first jobs and suddenly they don't have to lose any of their paycheck to that pyramid scheme that doesn't even keep with inflation. Let the rest who have paid up to that point have it as an option to continue putting into the funds until the last contributers retire too.
