Have you ever been to a military boot camp graduation? My family was privileged last weekend to attend our son-in-law's boot camp graduation at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. We were also fortunate enough to reserve the last available room at a hotel on the base. I recommend getting to Hilton Field at Fort Jackson early the morning of graduation to ensure a seat, 6am for the 9am ceremony. Bundle up if it's cold, you will be there for several hours. Boot camp graduation is a 2-day event - Family Day, and the graduation ceremony the next day. Unfortunately, after many hours of waiting at the airport and three canceled flights trying to get to Charlotte NC, we missed Family Day. However, we did arrive in time to see his graduation. Fort Jackson is the Army's primary Basic Combat Training site. The "companies" that graduated from Fort Jackson (U.S. Army Basic Combat Training) on January 29, 2026, were Companies A, B, C, D, and E. These were part of the 3rd Battalion, 34th Infantry Regiment, 165th Infantry Brigade. This was a combined Basic Combat Training graduation and retirement review ceremony held at Hilton Field at Fort Jackson. There were over 800 graduates that day. Did you know that after the graduation ceremony, the graduates must remain at attention until "tapped out" by family? At Fort Jackson, the "tap out" (or "tapping out") is an emotional, time-honored tradition that marks the official end of the intense basic training phase and the beginning of the graduates' new chapter as Soldiers. The Soldiers stand rigidly at attention, maintaining strict military bearing: eyes forward, no smiling, no moving, no speaking, and showing no emotion. This discipline symbolizes the self-control and professionalism they've learned over the past 10 weeks. Family members, friends, or loved ones (who have been seated in the bleachers or viewing areas) are then invited to come down onto the field. Each graduate must remain at attention until personally "tapped out"—usually by a gentle tap on the shoulder (or sometimes a hug) from their designated family member or supporter. This tap serves as the symbolic release from the formation and the end of their isolation from loved ones during training. I must admit, my husband and I wanted so very badly to tap out a lone graduate still waiting—he did smile slightly but never moved. Once tapped, the Soldier is free to break attention. They typically salute, then embrace their family in a heartfelt reunion. This moment is highly emotional, as it's frequently the first physical contact and unrestricted interaction after months of limited communication. The tradition emphasizes family support, pride in service, and the transition from trainee to Soldier. It's a cherished highlight for attendees and the new Soldiers. No worries though, if a graduate has no family present, a fellow Soldier, cadre member (like a drill sergeant), or volunteer may step in to tap them out, ensuring no one is left standing alone. If you ever have the chance to witness a U.S. Army Basic Combat Training graduation like the one at Fort Jackson, I strongly recommend going if you can. It's hands-down one of the most powerful, unforgettable experiences I've ever been part of. 🇺🇲
