If these tariffs end up working I don’t know if there’s any remaining subject matter we should trust the “experts” on.

BREAKING: Trump on Canada: Canada has agreed to ensure we have a secure Northern Border, and to finally end the deadly scourge of drugs like Fentanyl that have been pouring into our Country, killing hundreds of thousands of Americans, while destroying their families and communities all across our Country. Canada will implement their $1.3 Billion Border plan, and as per Prime Minister Trudeau, will be, “reinforcing the Border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are, and will be, working on protecting the Border. In addition, Canada is making new commitments to appoint a Fentanyl Czar, we will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the Border, launch a Canada-U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering. I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl, and we will be backing it with $200 million.” As President, it is my responsibility to ensure the safety of ALL Americans, and I am doing just that. I am very pleased with this initial outcome, and the Tariffs announced on Saturday will be paused for a 30 day period to see whether or not a final Economic deal with Canada can be structured. FAIRNESS FOR ALL!

We are witnessing the unwind of the WW2 economic order. What's happening now is much bigger than tariffs. For nearly 80 years the US exported dollars while importing goods & debt. That system is failing. What's next? A move back to a neutral reserve currency. Got #Bitcoin?

Sending 10,000 Canadian soldiers to patrol the border would be cheaper than massive bailout packages for workers and companies.

@tobi Mexico struck a deal - surely Canada can strike a deal today to delay the tariffs. It would be extremely disappointing if our leaders in Canada cannot put their political posturing aside and make a deal.

If there is any doubt that the cost of the tariff is passed through to consumers, the price of propane (to heat my house) just went up by the amount of the tariff

BREAKING: In their meeting today, Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued an ultimatum to Panama’s president José Raúl Mulino over the Panama Canal: Without immediate action to address “Chinese influence,” the US will take “all necessary measures to protect its rights under the Treaty,” Axios’ @BarakRavid reports. @JDVance If Canada were to meet NATO target military spending and were to stop the flow of illegal drugs into the US, would the tariffs go away?

@AnthonyGirand Highly recommend you try it out! Even if you can get a demo at a local Tesla store. Tesla owners freak out about it because it’s worth freaking out about. I literally don’t drive anymore. My car takes me everywhere - it’s crazy.

I have no idea how you look at Tesla vs. Waymo and conclude that Waymo will be the longterm winner. Tesla already won. People just don’t know it yet.

This is a five alarm fire. The people elected Donald Trump to be President - not Elon Musk. Having an unelected billionaire, with his own foreign debts and motives, raiding US classified information is a grave threat to national security. This should not be a partisan issue.

I partially but do not entirely agree with this perspective. Retaliating to tariffs with broad based tariffs will only lead to further hardship in Canada. THIS DOES NOT MEAN NO RETALIATION. Here is what Canada should consider instead. 1) Eliminate protections for American intellectual property, including in technology and pharmaceuticals. 2) Pursue domestication (or “allyfication”since investment should remain open to EU/Democratic world) of critical production assets in key sectors, the requirement for data storage in Canada, and potential limits on American owned traditional media and social media platforms operating in Canada. This in particular would be value destruction that primarily hurts American businesses, and sets the precedent for Europe and Democratic Asia. 3) Announce intention to work with Europe and Democratic Asia on a replacement to the American dollar as the global trade and reserve currency (de-dollarization) 4) End all announced subsidies for American-owned enterprises in Canada (yes, including in EVs). Cancel all procurement contracts with America (including in defense). Shift those dollars to other allies. 5) Announce a one-time capital gains exemption for any/all Canadians who sell American investments and repatriate the capital to Canada. 6) Construct incentives to lure highly-paid Canadians in American Financial and Technology industries to move back to Canada.
Peter Schiff@PeterSchiff

25% tariffs on goods coming in from Mexico and Canada are not a disaster for Canada or Mexico. There will be declines in U.S. sales, but those countries can still consume those goods domestically or export to other nations. So companies making those goods will see profits fall for the portion of their sales that go to the next highest bidders. But Americans will be paying higher prices on all Canadian and Mexican imports they buy, or for higher-priced domestic substitutes where available. But many lower-income Americans will be priced out of the market for those goods entirely. So the tariffs portend more negative consequences for Americans than they do for Canadians or Mexicans. If either Mexico or Canada retaliates with tariffs of their own, the effect will be the same. Their own citizens will suffer more than Americans. That is the unique nature of a trade war. Each side suffers most from its own offensive. The best way for Mexico and Canada to win is not to retaliate. That would include not providing any subsidies to exporters or any attempt to weaken their currencies. That would only reduce the sting tariffs have on Americans, shift the burden to their own people, and prolong the trade war.

Mexico sends ton of fentanyl into our country. Canada has seen a massive increase in fentanyl trafficking across its border. There are three ways of stopping this. The first is ask nicely, which we’ve done. It’s gone nowhere. Now we’re on to the consequences phase.

@Austen The world subsidizes the US through agreeing to use the USD as the global trade currency. US owns the printer. If anything, the US sends the bill to the RoW. Alienating the RoW on stop using your currency isn’t the leverage you think it is.
