@eli_kamisher @JDwithTW @yfreemark Low ridership reality due to Bay Area land use (too few destinations near stations + overall low densities). I’m on the current BART San Jose extension northbound from San Jose and had an empty train car until Hayward (ie where the slightly more urban part of the east bay begins)

Looking forward to discussing #BayArea poll results tomorrow morning - esp looking at the data on people going #downtown (ie many don’t…) as actually reflecting the enduring importance of downtown. (Major city downtowns our region’s most important activity centers).

@arpitrage @conorsen The downtown plan from the 1980s was agnostic on office vs housing (look up C3 district zoning). SF restricts office too (Prop M). Downtown plan is worth reading. Residential development outcompeted office many years since dot com bust (eg Millennium tower was an “office site”)

@conorsen A lot of this is the legacy of the period around Diane Feinstein's mayorship. The deal was a downzoning of housing production starting in 1978, paired with aggressive development of downtown office towers. Left a very unbalanced city.

Part of the San Francisco thing is how Downtown/Union Square are so concentrated on offices, hotels, and tourism. No housing, no entertainment for locals. Offices being dead hurts retail, and if retail is dead that hurts tourism…it’s a busted ecosystem.
Michelle Tandler@michelletandler

Hotel rates are up across the US, but not in San Francisco. The city's politicians can blame remote work & Covid all they want - but the numbers don't lie. San Francisco is uniquely in trouble - and it's due to policy decisions & poor leadership.

Geographic #inequality grew to new high in 2021 w #economic activity concentrated in largest/richest regions. This is why place-based investments like #CERF @CAGoBiz @CALaborAgency @Cal_OPR + Fed progs #CHIPS #TechHubs so imp to share oppor to all regions #regionsrisetogether

Reliable #transit must be an ongoing #climate and #economicdevelopment priority for #California. The proposed budget agreement to fund transit is a positive step forward. Thank you to many tireless advocates and champions. Below is a very clear summary from @SPUR_Urbanist
SPUR@SPUR_Urbanist

The CA legislature reached an agreement on a budget deal that provides significant new funding to support transit. Statewide, the package restores $2 Billion in TIRCP from the General Fund and makes this funding flexible for operations.

With all our challenges, SF & Bay Area can & will recover. But allowing public transit to crater is one of the most efficient ways to undermine that recovery. We must throw our transit systems a lifeline as their ridership gradually recovers. We’re working to make that happen.

S.F. isn’t in a doom loop yet. We will be if California doesn’t save public transit. 8 in 10 BART trip are to downtown SF, Oakland, and Berkeley. Successful downtowns and transit and intertwined. Pleased to share my op-ed in today’s ⁦@sfchroniclesfchronicle.com/opinion/articl…

Transit is an essential part of a economically thriving and just society. #California has already made a commitment to more transit operating funds in many state reports. Now is the time to demonstrate that commitment in the finalization of the budget.
Michael Pimentel@mpimentel88

Transit is essential — not just for mobility, but for our economy, workers, and climate. Today, 60+ CA orgs called on @GavinNewsom @RendonAD62 @SenToniAtkins @NancySkinnerCA @PhilTing to protect the critical budget actions taken last week and also provide new $$$ for transit ops.

Locating more jobs/retail/education, + other destinations near transit is critical for #equity - and too often missing in TOD discussions & w govts/employers. Great thread from @humantransit on how location choices impact driving/travel patterns, esp for those w fewer resources
Jarrett Walker@humantransit

There needs to be a lot more attention to the location choices that organizations make on behalf of other people: their employees, their clients etc. 7/

Inspiring to be with community leaders at the @CalSGC Catalyst conference who see urgency to address CA #climate & #equity needs + optimistic to use the ~100B infra $ to achieve diff outcomes (eg expand Ibank as state green bank to invest in regional priorities from #CERF)
