He double-checked the property survey, made sure it was sturdy, and felt proud seeing it finished right on his property line. Then a letter from the HOA showed up: the fence has to come down because it isn’t set back 8 inches from the property line. Eight. Inches. Not because it’s unsafe. Not because it’s on the neighbor’s land. Just because the rulebook says so. HOAs exist to maintain consistency and property values, but moments like this are where frustration boils over. There’s a difference between protecting a neighborhood’s standards and micromanaging homeowners over inches most people would never notice. When you own the home, pay the mortgage, and maintain the yard, should an HOA really have the authority to dictate something that precise on your own property?
