@cremieuxrecueil A knowledgeable friend told me that statins are very good at lowering cholesterol, but less good at extending life spans. Do you agree, @cremieuxrecueil?

Anti-statin grifters are funny to watch because they want desperately to appear scientific without actually being scientific. They say things like '[An underpowered observational study] shows ApoB and LDL don't predict plaque progression', omitting that it wasn't expected to.

Another wave of Full Self-Driving V14.3.2 (2026.2.9.10) is now going out to additional AI4 vehicles in North America. This wave is expected to include about ~15-20% of eligible vehicles, bringing the total to ~55-60%.

Anyone else still stuck on FSD V.14.2.2.5? Should I just switch my software update preference to standard because the advanced tab clearly doesn’t do anything.

When did zesting, once a thrilling moment in a handful of recipes, become the precondition of all cooking? How much zesting are we expected to do? And how can we look at the humiliated, pith-covered fruit as anything but a victim of our own intimate violence?

Smokers are beneficial to the welfare state from a financial POV. They consume a product that is highly taxed, and they die sooner and receive less pension payments. Lifetime healthcare costs aren't that different compared to non smokers, for the latter need similarly expensive treatments late in their life, only for different reasons. If I were an amoral bureaucrat tasked with saving the welfare state, I would encourage smoking.

I can't agree with this. Smoking may be a grim habit, but what an adult does to their own body is their own choice. This sets a nasty precedent. Should the state have opinions on other areas of lifestyle, or diet, as well? It's none of their business. The link is about legislation that's finished drafting in the UK to ban cigarettes for all people born after 2008. bbc.com/news/articles/…

She's half right, perhaps for the wrong reasons. Building more solar won't reduce electricity prices. There is already so much solar going into the grid that (wholesale) prices are low or negative when it's active. In other words, solar only gives us electricity when we don't want it.

I am pretty annoyed by a local retired lady who has both - Advocated against building new solar nearby because of the environment - Advocated against building new data centers because of the electricity prices

Solar doesn’t work in the GB it’s too far north they say. What are you going to do when the wind isn’t blowing they say. Well today we have an example. Still enough wind for power generation and bags of solar. Gas hardly features. Get used to the new normal 💨 ☀️

@zagrebbi And what is their yield on students admitted with perfect scores? I'll bet it's well under 50%.

In 2024, Columbia received 97 perfect SAT scores for ~1,400 spots. There aren't enough 1600 scorers in America to fill Columbia's class once — let alone "a few times over"!

Ran the experiment for Columbia using admissions data (h/t @cremieuxrecueil). If Columbia admitted purely by SAT in 2024, the cutoff would be 1560 — and the class would be 46% East Asian. Black and Hispanic students would essentially disappear.

If Harvard admitted students strictly by SAT score, filling slots in descending order starting at 1600, what would be the lowest SAT score admitted to the school? And what would be the resulting demographics of the student body?

The slow death of formal dining and the lack of free time to polish the silver means there’s a glut of formal tableware on the second‑hand market going for a fraction of original retail prices. The craftsmanship is often amazing, but the aesthetics often don’t suit modern homes

Henry Cavill and his longtime partner, Natalie Viscuso. They aren't particularly looks-matched. Most would agree he is noticeably better looking than her. Yet examples like this are quite common. It highlights how men frequently prioritize loyalty, honesty, and compatibility over purely superficial looks.

I have gotten past my idealism to the point where if wealthy, powerful people are supporting something I understand it's because it will bring them either more money or more power. Period. I used to think Bill Gates cared about disease-ridden Africa and Barack Obama cared about health care for children and Bernie Sanders cared about the working man. No more. I believe Gates was invested in pharma (to pay for his teen-girl habit) and Obama wanted to take over the entire American health system for reasons of government control and Sanders is just running the same Animal Farm gambit that socialists always do.

I don't get all the crowing about 200,000 people at the No Kings rally in St. Paul. Bruce Springsteen played a free concert. Only 200,000 people showed up. That actually kind of surprises me.

@Scienceofsport Many marathons sponsor groups that have a targeted finishing time. They are led by a runner who can easily achieve the goal time: e.g. a "Sub-3:00 group".
