I have this theory that because McDavid is so good, coaches give him all the gravy offensive zone starts and powerplay time, which means that other players (even elite players) don’t get into an offensive rhythm, which means the team has no depth even when it clearly does. This pattern of lacking scoring depth (especially in the big game) is following him around, even on a veritable all-star Team Canada. Sometimes he can overcome it personally by going nuclear, sometimes he can’t. But when he doesn’t, nobody else seems to contribute offensively because they’re not put into those positions to have success.

@OilAcumen This is exactly my take. Putting McD and his premium O zone starts ahead of the rest of the team and playing him 1:30 on every PP with the players behind him available was a coaching error. This was supposed to be Team Canada not Team 97, 29, and 8
