At Harvard, that is not what is behind the large number of A's though and *that's* the issue.

Grades do not do 1 - never have, never will - and it is malpractice for them to do 3. Grades should be a reflection of mastery - NOTHING else. If every student is mastering material (which they should be) a large number of A's is not a problem.

The report concludes that the grading system is failing because it doesn’t: -motivate students (they do enough to get an A and stop there) -communicate mastery of course materials (grades now only indicate whether work “meets expectations”) -distinguish the strongest students

Let's be clear, that what is driving this is wealthy children and their parents being empowered to attack vulnerable faculty when their kids don't get good grades. That's where this problem comes from.

San Francisco schools is trying its absolute hardest to make sure all middle income families who could move out of the city do so right away “Grading for Equity” is going to be a real disaster and I guess this is a boon for SF private schools and Burlingame housing prices

We owe our young people an education that prepares them to succeed. The proposed changes to grading at SFUSD would not accomplish that.
I have conveyed our view to SFUSD. We are optimistic that there is a better path forward for our kids and their future.
