So we found ourselves in a new place And it's clear That we're Not alone. Faces That we've never seen before. And it feels like Like we never left home. - The M Machine

Stock iOS Safari. No frame drops. Animation perfectly in sync with browser's scroll physics. Sticky shrinky headers. No throttling on low battery mode. Feels 100% native. Pure CSS! Try to figure out how.

@jordwalke I feel like it's somehow using a container query to translateZ the element, but I don't know how you'd make that smooth unless there are a ton of container queries 😅

What’s the smallest number that feels to you like it *should* be prime, but isn’t? (Answer before looking at replies please!)

Reason 162 to dislike WGSL: With smoothstep(a, b, x), "a" MUST be less than "b" or it will throw an error. There's no reason that you can't interpolate in reverse and it's often useful to do so.

@BenjiGameDev Seems like a maze guardian that opens and closes doors as it moves through the maze, like the Dampe race in Zelda OOT

@MaybeNotMonitor If we allow entire game series, The Zero Escape games for sure. Commercial failure in Japan, but cult classic in US/UK since we were already primed with SAW.

@typedfemale The fact that most engineers are only involved in software engineering as a means of solving equations they would otherwise do by hand, and not as an integral part of their research, is so saddening.

@typedfemale I learned you could compute binary phase diagrams from enthalpy of mixing equations in my thermo class. I then made a diagram generator and my prof was like "why spend all that time coding if you already had the concept?" as if programming was orthogonal to material science. 🤦‍♂️

apparently the SOTA simulator for years for an important class of material science problems uses a hybrid approach of FEA, an analytical model and cellular automata. it is 7 files of python each 5k lines long that you run sequentially. it does not use numpy or any array library

@robinhouston AI to Zombies is mostly a collection of the sequences in an approachable order anyway, so I'd say skip reading them on LessWrong and listen to the audiobook! I do highly recommend it! I haven't read the other book so I don't have a good idea on which to read first.

@arithmoquine I've thought about this before. I feel like some entity that had feelers or swarms might not understand scale invariance, or even a rather large being that had parallel optics for their eyes.

imagine what it would be like to not understand scale invariance, and notice that it isn't trivial computationally imagine experiments dealing with these invariances think about how hallucinations often being highly symmetric might reveal information about visual invariances
