@serasolders The way it was explained to me back when I was in the game is that a fair amount of the tuition and fees paid by PIs is returned back to the department in the form of TA and department funded RA stipends, in addition to the funding for other departmental budget items.

Genuinely curious - why do PhD students cost so much in tuition and fees when we use so few university resources? We’re taught in early years by profs who aren’t even paid to teach us, and the rest of our time we contribute as workers. Imagining if that money went to us instead?

@STEMxicanEd Not really, we just needed to give them a few weeks lead time by sending over the problems and solutions. However, they will then integrate those problems into the whole platform for everyone else to use as well, so you may want to take that into consideration.

@STEMxicanEd At Brown, we switched to using them during the pandemic for homework and remote exams. You can make your own multiple choice problems but anything that used their tools, where their platform really shines, had to be worked on together with their in-house problem team.

Because of course someone in the classroom is COVID + again. Not like the first quarantine shouldn’t have been a moment to actually quarantine and reflect on what types of behavior may have precipitated the quarantine. But whatever, what else should I expect 2 years into this.

One thing that is super rad is to have your kids sent home from daycare because of a COVID positive exposure right before Christmas and to then have the kids come back for one day after two weeks quarantine, only for them to send us straight back into quarantine. so cool.

Gonna just ask the real question here that I don’t see brought up. Why not just ignore Manchin and Synema and start negotiating with the more “moderate” republicans like Romney, Collins, and Murkowski? There isn’t anything that can be added to the bill for them to vote for it?

Sources tell @NewsHour that paid family leave has been dropped entirely from the reconciliation bill because Senator Manchin opposed it. This is a huge blow to progressives and President Biden who were vocally supportive of having it in the bill.
