It’s even more damning that after Jesus Christ allegedly resurrected, he hung around for 40days… but all of his appearances were only within Jerusalem and Galilee.… imagine the creator of the whole universe claiming to die for the whole world.. hung around for 40 days after resurrection but only appear within a very tiny geographical location..he was even eating bread and fish with his disciples 😅 this was the perfect moment to appear to cultures all over the world and introduce himself and what he’s all about…African societies ,Australian aboriginals,south and north American cultures etc So very valid tweets like the one I’m quoting wouldn’t exist… and no one would have excuses. Your English teacher made you read Shakespeare for years. She probably never once mentioned the part where South African scientists scraped residue from 400-year-old pipes dug up in his backyard, sent them to a police narcotics lab, and found way more than cannabis. In 2001, a team in South Africa got hold of 24 clay pipe fragments dug up from Shakespeare’s property in Stratford-upon-Avon. They ran the residue through the same drug-testing equipment cops use on evidence seized from crime scenes today. The gear can pick up traces of whatever was burned in a pipe four centuries ago. Still works. Cannabis turned up in 8 of the 24 pipes. Four of those came straight from Shakespeare’s garden at New Place, the estate where he spent his final years before dying in 1616. That part matches the tweet. What the tweet leaves out is everything else. Two pipes tested positive for cocaine. The source was Peruvian coca leaves, probably brought to England by explorers like Sir Francis Drake after raiding Spanish ships. Neither cocaine pipe came from Shakespeare’s garden though. One came from a place down the road called “Harvard House,” the Stratford home of John Harvard’s mother. Same John Harvard that Harvard University is named after. Cocaine and the Ivy League origin story, in the same zip code. Other pipes had traces of a hallucinogenic compound found in nutmeg, plus camphor, nicotine, and vanillin. A sleepy English market town in the 1600s was sitting on a pharmacy of plants pulled in from every continent the explorers could reach. The legal angle is wild too. In 1533, Henry VIII ordered English landowners to grow hemp on their property, a quarter acre for every 60 acres, because the Royal Navy needed it for rope and sails. So cannabis was a government-mandated crop while people a few miles away were quietly smoking it in clay pipes. The researcher behind the study, Francis Thackeray from the University of the Witwatersrand, thinks Shakespeare dropped a hint in Sonnet 76. The poem mentions “invention in a noted weed” and a desire to stay away from “compounds strange.” Thackeray reads that as the playwright nodding at cannabis for creative fuel while keeping his distance from cocaine. Shakespeare scholars aren’t having it. Columbia’s James Shapiro said the pipes could have belonged to a guest, a servant, anyone. And the Oxford English Dictionary says nobody even called cannabis “weed” until 1929. Whether Shakespeare himself packed those pipes is probably unknowable. What we do know: cannabis, Peruvian cocaine, hallucinogenic nutmeg, and camphor were all being smoked in small clay pipes within walking distance of each other, in a quiet English town, four hundred years ago.
