My two cents on the DoorDash discourse. I just spent some time poking around the Consumer Expenditure Survey, which is the BLS survey of Americans' spending habits. In 1989, Americans allocated 6.3% of their spending to “food away from home," which would include restaurants and takeaway. In 2024, the latest year with solid Consumer Expenditure Survey data, Americans devoted just 5% of their total spending to food away from home. I trust that the NYT has apparently discovered some people willing to spend one-third of their entire post-tax income on delivery orders, but it seems that the DoorDash revolution has coincided with a declining *share* of American spending going to food away from home. We're also spending a smaller share on food cooked at home. Basically, in the long run, Americans are just a lot richer than they used to be.

NEVER EMAIL A VENUE FOR AVAILABILITY AGAIN We just officially launched the @perfectvenueco Marketplace so you can easily find and book a venue in one place and never need to email a venue for availability again. When I first started Perfect Venue to help people find and book a venue, I naively thought the solution was to build a simple venue directory to send leads to venues. I quickly learned though, that was not enough. The booking process still required sending dozens of emails to check availability, PDFs, handwritten credit card auth forms, etc. The process was stuck in the pre-iPhone era. We've spent the last few years bringing that process online with our CRM that is now used by thousands of businesses across the country to manage availability, send proposals, and more. 1st ever… This week a @McDonalds in Los Angeles (I wonder why…🤔) opened up the first “on the go” $mcd. It appears to be: Drive thru focused No lobby Mobile pickup window McDelivery lockers The lockers are a big deal because they have not been approved for the US system, despite international markets having them. I’m a huge fan. It’s interesting they have a separate pickup window for mobile orders vs just including them in lockers with delivery orders. I love the innovation, there are some sites this would work very well at. Full restaurants will still have their place but it’s nice to have this as an option. photos: Anthony Owen
