@2D0XPS @tc1415 You don’t really expect the officials of the British state to achieve their stated aims?

@CptHastings1916 Mrs Fisher and I often remind each other that there’s nothing *stopping* us from dressing for dinner. Perhaps we are lunatics (uncertified) though.

Reading another book of similar vintage by the same author and there is a privately run asylum for "certified lunatics" where the inmates wear evening dress for dinner. This is what they took from you, we have to go back etc etc

Fascinating glimpses of the past in old detective stories: just finished one set in an "old people's home" where one of the residents was in his mid-50s. Nothing physically wrong with him but he was a widower whose daughter had married & so he had "no-one to keep house for him".

@servingthurifer @OSacrumCorIesu @MadsDavies I think that would be a good thing. But I think the core point is that we don’t actually make a distinct requirement for Christians to engage in daily prayer in a way that suggests a real spiritual discipline.

@OSacrumCorIesu @therealsjpf @MadsDavies Maybe if we actually offered the two daily offices (morning and evening prayer) daily in a church at times working people can attend (6/7am and 6/7pm) then maybe it would help? 🤷‍♂️ (pure guesswork as I try to follow the 7 daily offices.)

I watched online "Christian Revival: Our Post-Liberal Hope?" at Pusey House & report on it for CT here. Warnings of civilisational collapse, confrontations with Islam and the “weirding” effect of digital media. And denunciation of "Doormat Christianity" churchtimes.co.uk/articles/2026/…

Holy Week is about to begin. Growing up, these posters were a common sight in windows. England needs a return to an unapologetic, everyday, commonplace Christianity.

@MadsDavies This comes up repeatedly when Muslim children come to church to learn about Christianity. What we know as freedom in Christ just looks like laziness or absence of discipline.

@MadsDavies One of the missing pieces, re Islam, is the little that Christianity expects re compulsory/obligatory prayer. 2 x offices are compulsory for clergy (although not everyone knows this!), but for nobody else. Fasting is lax to non existent. No outward vesture is expected.

Every country practised slavery. African nations more enthusiastically and more recently than most. So why go after Britain, which is unique in its determination to stamp out the foul trade? Why not, say, China or Nigeria or Saudi? Because Britain keeps inviting its enemies to have a go. It will not sanction countries that back motions like this. Incredibly, it would not even vote against the motion. telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/03/2…

What the Lords did last night was quite evil, but let's be honest: it's a symptom of a broad trend, the reversion to a pre-Christian contempt for the sanctity of human life as the last embers of our ethical and spiritual inheritance are consumed in the fire of secularism.

Any party serious about ‘defending Christianity’ could have an easy win at convincing those who are sceptical about what they mean by that claim by making a manifesto pledge to reverse this targeted, vindictive and immensely damaging decision.

@rmbastable @chinmj I remember irritating a republican by arguing that the monarchy was a democratic part of our constitution because the succession had been decided by Act of Parliament.

When I was a teenager I thought of myself as first a Marxist, then a social democrat, but I still adored Dr Johnson. I think my moral/political development has been a process of gradually realising that Johnson was right about everything

Arius' theology was defined "by the sin of proof-texting"? 🤨 Rowan Williams describes Arius as "a thinker and an exegete of resourcefulness, sharpness and originality".

On the danger of Lent “becom[ing] an exercise in giving things up…” But I think that’s a good thing. We’ve spent yrs telling people to go for walks or take up etc, whereas fasting is a collective discipline that cd draw us together to give us time to pray, opportunity to study (and to eat!). I believe that “giving up” is good, and that we should return to it.
Westminster Abbey@wabbey

Lent is an important time in the Christian calendar, and one which allows us to step away from the business of life, slow down and reflect. Last year, our Dean, Dr David Hoyle, was joined by the Reverend Catherine Williams to discuss themes of repentance and how we might observe a ‘Holy Lent’ ⤵️

A predicament for @churchofengland when so many of the bishops you could have a theological conversation with are about to retire, or have just retired. Really, the situation is dire, and just when people – young inquirers in particular – want theological depth. 1/2
